WWI Hero Brings Honor Home to Seminole County

On a beautiful spring day over a hundred years ago, a hero was born. Harold Leo Turner was born May 5, 1898, in Aurora, Mo., but called Seminole County, Okla., his home all his life. He was 16 when World War I began; by the time he was 20, Turner had already moved to Seminole and joined the U.S.

Type of Loss The type of casualty is indicated by the symbol at the right of each column. They are as follows: KIA-Killed in Action, anyone who was killed at the front or by enemy action in rear areas; or, if a prisoner of war, whether by air attack on his camp or by being shot, while escaping.

Roland Wells: a Life of Service

Roland Oscar Wells. He was born Sept. 18, 1914 in Hanna, Okla. Grandpa enlisted in the Oklahoma National Guard in 1940. He used to tell me that was when he got his first pair of shoes. After Pearl Harbor, his Guard unit, like so many others, was called up and placed on active status.

Jonas Burgess served in the United States Army from 1943-1945. He undertook his training in North Carolina at Camp Butner 78th Division. During his tour of duty, he spent time in Normandy and earned a Bronze Star and five Campaign Ribbons.

When Freeland “Rusty” Carbitcher enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 18, he didn’t know he would be later listed as MIA. During an outpost transfer, he went one way towards Quan Loi and his papers went somewhere else.
