When Freeland “Rusty” Carbitcher enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 18, he didn’t know he would be later listed as MIA. During an outpost transfer, he went one way towards Quan Loi and his papers went somewhere else. After his family was notified and he was later found, the Red Cross was instrumental in getting his family notified that he was still alive and fighting the war. Carbitcher served several years in active duty and later in the Oklahoma National Guard.
