Commissioners Consider Courthouse ATM

Sheriff Smith Questions Legality of Having Cash Machine on Premises

Posted in:

The Seminole County Board of County Commissioners discussed the possibility of installing an ATM machine in the Courthouse. The request was made due to customers not having cash or correct change, so they must leave to find an ATM and come back.

The first question the commissioners had was about the process of obtaining an ATM. District 1 Commissioner Russell Yott commented that first step they would have to take is finding someone willing to install the machine. He pointed out they will need to fill the machine and frequently monitor it.

District 2 Commissioner Tim Porter suggested they could reach out to the banks to see what the process is, commenting that they may not be interested. Commissioner Yott doubted the machine would receive much business.

Seminole County Sherriff Shannon Smith questioned the legality of having a machine in the building. He noted that it could appear that someone was making money off of the County, suggesting they should get a legal opinion. He also mentioned the safety and security of the building.

District 3 Commissioner Clifton Taylor concluded the conversation by repeating the suggestion that they start by reaching out to the banks to see if they are even interested and then consulting with Assistant District Attorney Candice Irby about the legal issues involved.
