The 17th century French philosopher René Descartes famously said, “I think, therefore I am.” And what Descartes meant by that was he knew he existed because he was conscious of himself; what is called self-consciousness.

FRIDAY, JULY 26, 2024 DEAR ABBY: My mother is toxic. She had a terrible childhood, and she takes it out on me and my younger siblings. I live far away; they live in the same town as she does. If they don’t drop everything for her and do what she wants, she calls them selfish.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 24, 2024 DEAR ABBY: My 25-yearold son lives with his two girlfriends, who are also romantically involved with each other. They share a single bedroom. One of them has a baby due this week, and the other has made noises about wanting a child.

TUESDAY, JULY 23, 2024 DEAR ABBY: I’m a Chinese man born in the United States. My girlfriend, whom I’ve yet to meet in person, lives in China and is 24 years younger than I am. (I live in California.) We’re awaiting approval of paperwork with the U.S.

SUNDAY, JULY 21, 2024 DEAR ABBY: My husband and I had a baby right around the time my father remarried. I didn’t know my new stepmother very well when she started giving me parenting advice.

If you see it, you can never unsee it. You hear it, it’s in your memory bank forever. Unless it’s the phone number to the pediatrician when your kid is running a 102 temp at midnight. But usually, everything you see and hear becomes part of you – good and bad. Kind of a scary, intimidating fact.

This is what we would say when Old Judge came trotting to us from a half mile away hearing our whistle! He was always ready for a scratch, a hug, or a sugar cube. He was an old-as-dirt black plow horse which Daddy had brought home for us kids.

FRIDAY, JULY 19, 2024 DEAR ABBY: I was shocked at your response to “Hosted Out” (March 28), who was frustrated at having to host, feed and entertain her husband’s hunting buddy and his wife several times a year.
