Dr. Thomas Hewett Williams, known locally as Dr. Tom, long-time resident of Wewoka, Oklahoma, died peacefully at 1:45 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2021, at the age of 84.

Tom was born September 1st, 1936, in Chickasha, Oklahoma and graduated from Wewoka High School, Class of 1954, where he played center on the football team, and won a state championship in boys’ doubles tennis when he was a sophomore in high school.

A graduate of The University of Oklahoma (OU), and Northwestern University Dental School, he served as Captain in the Dental Corps in Fort Hood, Texas in the early 1960’s, then spent most of his orthodontic career in the Chicago area where he had offices in Winnetka Illinois and the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago.

He held leadership roles in the American Orthodontic Society and served on the faculty at Northwestern University Dental School.

In his later years he returned to Wewoka, Oklahoma and continued his orthodontic practice up until his recent hospitalization. For decades, he was an avid golfer at the Dr. Gil Morgan Golf Course in Wewoka and scored several holes-in-one over the years.

He was an enthusiastic OU Sooners fan and attended as many live OU football games as possible. He also closely followed OU Softball and was thrilled when they won the 2021 National Championship.

He was an active parishioner of the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Holdenville often supplying flowers for church services as well as participating in other volunteer activities.

He was a kind and generous man and would occasionally surprise restaurant servers with $100 tips.

He is survived by his four children, two of his step-children, their spouses, grandchildren and spouses, and great grandchildren: Susan Kay Williams, Joseph Simon Mella, Joseph Williams Mella, Laila Mewha Reiss, Goma Devi Mella-Reiss, Ati Norbu Mella-Reiss, Veda Kai Mella-Reiss, Nicholas Williams Mella; Tamara Ann Williams, Joseph Terence Hodges, Dylan Williams Hodges, Marie Louise Hodges, Jesse David Hodges; Edward Hewett Williams, Michael Lambert Williams, Lisa Marie Kattan, Stella Kattan Williams, Lukas Kattan Williams; RC Whitson, Kristina Lynn Whitson, Kyler Marek, Kaleb Marek, Kenna Marek; Kate Whitson Vaughn, Will Vaughn, Kingston Vickers, Indie Vickers, Jackson Vickers, Brazos Belle Vaughn, Kelly Michele Whitson, Marcus Feree, Laurel Avery Perez Feree, Kara Whitson Wright, Rodrique Charles Wright, Kendrique James Wright, Kamden Daniel Wright, and Susan Whitson Crane, Michael Crane, Noelle Neal-Crane, Joshua Crane, and several in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents Thurman Hurd Williams, Jr. (Spink) and Clara Kramer Williams, his spouse Darilyn Dutton Williams also from Wewoka, Oklahoma as well as his stepdaughter Michele Diane Whitson and step-son-in-law Gary Crane.

Services will be held at 10 am, Sunday, October 17 th , 2021, at St Paul’s Episcopal Church, 120 E 8 th Str, Holdenville, Oklahoma 74848.

Contributions in memory of Thomas may be made to Dr. Gil Morgan Golf Course in Wewoka and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Holdenville.
