Alleged Sex Offender Nabbed; Mother Faces Pair of Felony Charges
An alleged fugitive sex offender has been apprehended and his mother has been charged with one felony count of harboring a fugitive and one felony count of obstructing an officer, according to documents filed in the District Court of Seminole County.
The probable cause affidavit filed in this case states on Monday, July 19, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Department learned that Tommy Hasbell Jr., 30, was staying at a location in Seminole County and confirmed through ODIS (Offender Data Information System) that Hasbell had two warrants for his arrest. Seminole County Undersheriff Matt Haley contacted other deputies and they went to the residence where they believed Hasbell was located. When they arrived they observed several people outside the residence, and Haley recognized one of them as Hasbell’s mother, Kay Hasbell, 59. A check of all the individuals revealed there were no outstanding warrants. When asked if they had seen Tommy Hasbell, everyone said they had not, and a few stated they didn’t know who he was, explaining they were there to purchase an RV that was parked in the yard.
The affidavit states that when Undersheriff Haley asked Kay if Tommy was home, she claimed she hadn’t seen him in two weeks, and she didn’t know where he was staying. Deputy Edward Trent notified Haley he had heard movement inside the house, so Kay was asked again if Tommy was home, adding they both knew it hadn’t been two weeks since she had seen him. According to the affidavit, she then claimed she hadn’t seen him in two days. Asked if he was home at that time, she replied that she didn’t know. She had been to town and just returned and had gone inside briefly to use the bathroom and didn’t see him then, she told police.
After receiving permission to enter the residence, Haley and Trent conducted a search and found Tommy in the back bedroom with Nancy Kaytlin Cordell, 26. He was instructed to stand up, and when he did, he was placed in handcuffs. Dispatch stated that there was a possible warrant for Cordell through Seminole Nation. Under questioning, Cordell allegedly stated they had been at the residence for a few days. Kay then confirmed she had known they were there and had seen them that morning.
The affidavit states that Tommy was taken into custody for outstanding warrants. The seminolecosheriff.com website states that Tommy Hasbell was booked on charges of forcible sodomy, lewd or indecent proposals or acts to child, rape by instrumentation, and driving with license canceled, suspended, or revoked. Kay was taken into custody by Deputy Kendra Goodwin and booked for obstructing an officer and harboring a fugitive from justice. Goodwin was taken into custody at the request of the Seminole Nation and booked for failure to appear on a contempt citation.
