Preparedness is Best Defense During Storm Season in Okla.
With spring on the horizon, warmer weather invites us outdoors for cookouts, gardening, and quality time with family and friends. However, spring and summer also bring the potential for severe storms.
Canadian Valley Electric Cooperative (CVEC) says its team is always prepared to respond when storms cause power outages.
“Safety is our top priority, and our line crews take every precaution while working to restoring power. We encourage you to also take steps to keep your family safe and prepared during storm season,” a company spokesperson said in a press release.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends the following preparedness measures. For more resources, visit www.ready. gov:
• Stock up on essentials. Keep at least a threeday supply of non-perishable food, water, and necessities such as diapers and toiletries.
• Maintain hygiene and sanitation supplies. Have items like soap, hand sanitizer, and towelettes on hand.
• Check your First Aid kit. Ensure you have pain relievers, bandages, and any necessary prescriptions.
• Prepare household essentials. Keep flashlights, extra batteries, a manual can opener, and a battery-powered radio or TV readily available.
• Keep emergency supplies accessible. Store them in a designated location that’s easy to reach.
During a prolonged power outage:
• Turn off major appliances, TVs, and computers to prevent damage from power surges when electricity is restored. Leave one light on to signal when power returns.
• If using a portable generator, ensure it can handle your power needs and always follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions.
• Stay informed through local news, NOAA Weather Radio, and CVEC’s Facebook page for storm updates.
Stay Clear of Downed Power Lines Severe weather can bring down power lines. Always assume they are energized—never approach or attempt to move them. If flooding occurs, avoid walking through areas where power lines may be submerged.
