Number of Area Schools Affected by Flu Continues to Grow
The list of schools in Seminole County affected by illness including influenza continues to grow.
As reported in our Jan. 30 edition, Butner Schools and Varnum Elementary moved to virtual learning Thursday and Friday due to a high number of absences related to the flu. Early yesterday afternoon, Seminole Public Schools (SPS) announced that Northwood Elementary would follow suit on Friday. SPS released the following statement: “Due to a significant number of illnesses affecting both students and staff at Northwood Elementary, the decision has been made to transition to a virtual learning day on Friday, January 31, 2025. This precautionary measure aims to ensure the health and safety of everyone within the school community. During this time, the school will focus on thorough disinfecting and cleaning protocols to prepare the building for a return to in-person learning on Monday. While Northwood Elementary will be closed for in-person classes, all other Seminole Public School sites will continue to operate as usual. Students at Northwood Elementary will receive work packets today, which will contain assignments and materials for their virtual learning day on January 31, 2025. The assignments in the packets should be completed and returned by Monday, February 3, 2025.”
According to the Oklahoma State Department of Health, flu can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Flu symptoms usually come on suddenly. People who have flu often feel some or all of these signs and symptoms: Fever or feeling feverish/ chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches; headaches and fatigue (tiredness).
Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults. It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.
