While broadcasting seemingly total chaos on the noon news, I quickly turned the TV off, and began thinking of what to write for this weekend’s column. I want to remind readers that all is not “going to hell in a handbasket,” as preachers used to say. On August 10, a 100 mph wind storm called a Derecho blasted through Des Moines, Iowa, causing all kinds of damage. For most, the next week was time for cleanup and repair, but Ray Drake had a problem bigger than he could handle. Four large, mature trees had been blown down in his yard, leaving him with limbs and debris up to two feet in diameter. Also, a length of his privacy fence had been knocked down. Ray’s biggest obstacle, though, was the fact that he’s been paralyzed since 1989, being cared for by his two sisters. When Janice saw the damage, she called some old high school friends to see if she could borrow a chainsaw.
