Herman Stubblefield, an elder from Tennessee, used to visit his sister where I preached near Lawton. He was a WW II Army Air Force veteran, and he often thrilled me with his areal combat stories. He flew the P-38, the twin-boomed, fast and high-flying plane we had at the beginning of the war. I shared that one of my favorite planes was the P-47, the big “jug” of a plane that could dive like a greased anvil but wasn’t so fast in a climb. Herman stated that “we offered to fly top cover for them while they were trying to climb to altitude.”
