Sooners Baseball Completes Sweep, Set Program Record

NORMAN – No. 21 Oklahoma completed the three-game sweep over Coppin State with a 11-0 run-rule win Sunday afternoon in Norman.

The Sooners (7-0) outscored the Eagles (0-4) 57-1 on the weekend and outhit the opposition 37-9. With its seventh straight game scoring 10-plus, Oklahoma broke the program record for consecutive games with double-digit runs, eclipsing the 1998 and 1988 teams’ six consecutive.

Oklahoma raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, capped by a tworun double from freshman Alec Blair. The Sooners put up more crooked numbers in the second and third innings en route to their third straight runrule win in seven innings.

On the bump, freshman Cord Rager (W, 2-0) went five innings and fanned seven while allowing no runs, three hits and one walk. Through two starts the lefty has surrendered just one earned run.

OU swiped a season- high 10 bases Sunday, the most since stealing 11 vs. Wichita State in 2022 (2/22/22). The team was paced by Trey Gambill and Camden Johnson’s four each, the most since a program-record five stolen bases by Derek Wathan vs. Kansas State in 1996.

Eight Sooners registered a hit in Sunday’s contest with six bringing in at least one run and three (Blair, Drew Dickerson, Jaxon Willits) recording double-digit RBIs.

Juniors Mason Bixby (0.2 IP) and Isaac Williams finished the game on the mound for the Sooners with Williams striking out a pair.

The Sooners have scored double digits in a program-record seven straight games. OU outscored Coppin State 57-1 on the weekend, recording 13 extra-base hits and three home runs.

OU’s back-to-back shutouts were the first since May 4-5, 2018 vs. Kansas State (12-0, 2-0) Oklahoma drew a combined 44 walks in the series while OU pitching surrendered just seven walks and struck out 31 batters. Through seven games OU is outscoring the opposition 99-13 (14.1 runs/game).

The offense is batting .359 with 29 extrabase hits to opponents’ six.

The OU pitching staff has 79 strikeouts to 29 walks in the early season.

OU’s weekend rotation of Cameron Johnson, LJ Mercurius and Cord Rager have combined for 52 strikeouts to 12 walks and 4 ER on the year. Trey Gambill and Camden Johnson’s four stolen bases a piece on Sunday were the most since a program-record five by Derek Wathan vs. Kansas State in 1996.
