Oklahoma Sooners Heading Back to the Super Bowl
SOONER WIRE - The Oklahoma Sooners will be represented in the Super Bowl once again.
Former running back Rhamondre Stevenson and the New England Patriots advance to the championship game of the NFL after beating the Denver Broncos 10-7 on a snowy field almost two weeks ago.
Stevenson led the Patriots’ offense with 25 carries for 71 yards as the two sides played a defensive battle.
It’s the 11th season in a row in which at least one former Sooner has made it to the Super Bowl.
In recent years it was Creed Humphrey, Lane Johnson, and Jalen Hurts starring for the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. Now it’s Rhamondre Stevenson’s opportunity to cement his name in NFL lore with the New England Patriots.
A trio of former OU players — edge rusher Nik Bonitto, wide receiver/return specialist Marvin Mims Jr. and offensive guard Ben Powers — were on the losing side of the AFC Championship.
Stevenson is in his fifth year in the NFL. He shared carries with rookie TreVeyon Henderson, but the former Sooner has seen his workload increase during the NFL Playoffs.
In New England’s three games, Stevenson has seen 10, 16, and 25 carries to lead the Patriots’ rushing attack.
Stevenson has been a key contributor throughout New England’s postseason run. Against the Chargers, he rushed for 53 yards while also catching three passes for a team-high 75 yards. He followed that up with 70 rushing yards and 11 receiving yards against Houston.
Stevenson is playing his fifth season in the NFL. Before that, he played two seasons for the Sooners. At OU, Stevenson rushed for 1,180 yards and 13 touchdowns, and he won Cotton Bowl Classic MVP honors for his performance in the Sooners’ 55-20 win over Florida.
In the Super Bowl, Stevenson and the Patriots will face a Seattle Seahawks team that ranks No. 3 in the NFL in rushing defense and No. 1 in the NFL in yards per carry allowed.
