Wewoka Tigers Win Districts at Home Thursday

The Wewoka Tigers hosted their District Playoff Championship Thursday night and took on the Warner Eagles.

Wewoka played their hearts out but had a rubber- band match in their games.

The Lady Tigers started the evening off but fell behind with some three-point shooting from the Lady Eagles. Wewoka tried to find their rhythm in the first but stayed in the game just behind with eight points.

The second quarter played out better for the Lady Tigers as Wewoka held the Lady Eagles to just 11 points scored as the offense tried to close the gap.

The Lady Tigers were down by 10 points heading into the third quarter.

Warner stuck to their game plan from the first quarter and went on a 16-3 run in the frame. Wewoka’s Heisel Sanchez knocked down the three-point shot and kept the home crowd cheering.

The Lady Tigers had a hill to climb in the final quarter and Wewoka did their best to rally back with Sanchez knocking down two treys and Aubrey Alexander hitting one herself, but the time clock was not on Wewoka’s side as the Lady Tigers fell 30-52.

Leading the way for the Lady Tigers was Heisel Sanchez with 13 points, four treys and was one of two from the free throw line.

Kallie Abel scored 8 points and was two for two from the line.

The Tiger boys were ready to defend their home court next against the Waner Eagle boys.

The visiting Warner Eagles excited their fans as they took the early lead in the first, but the Tigers settled down and fired back with Bill Stephens scoring seven points in the frame to help the Tigers go up by one at the end of the quarter.

The Tigers figured out the visiting Eagles and caused multiple turnovers and frustrated Warner. Wewoka made their points count in the second and took a 20-11 run.

The Eagles were looking at a 14-point deficit heading into the third quarter.

Both teams rested at the break and came out fighting as the teams traded punches as both teams lit up the score board.

Both teams scored most of their points from the field, but the Tigers outscored the Eagles by one at the end of the frame.

Warner was down by 8 points heading into the final quarter. The Tigers never let off the gas as Bill Stephens scored 8 points and Mike Piza found his threepoint range to help Wewoka win the Class 2A, District 4 Championship with a final score of 62-52.

Leading the way for the Tigers was Bill Stephens with 27 points, one trey, 12 rebounds and was 8 of 9 from the free throw line.

Ladarious Woods scored 14 points, 10 rebounds and was two of four from the line.

The Tigers will stay at Warner for their next matchups.

The Wewoka Tigers faced Coalgate on Tuesday for their first round of Regionals. The Wewoka Lady Tigers will face Coalgate on Thursday the 26th at 6 p.m. for their first round of Regionals.
