After winning their District Playoffs over Warner 63-52, losing a very tough and close game against Latta at Regionals 63-64 and winning the Area Consolation Championship over Pocola 87-68, the Wewoka Tigers earned their way back to the OSSAA State Basketball Championship Tournament.
The Tigers faced the Hartshorne Miners on Thursday night in their first round of the tournament and pulled away in the second quarter in which the Miners could not make a comeback.
Wewoka won the first round 68-63 over Hartshorne at the New OG&E Coliseum. The #5 Tigers had made the quarterfinals with the win and faced the #7 Fairview Owls at Yukon on Friday night.
The first quarter was an all-out battle as it was a tug of war for the lead in the game. The Owls managed to take a one-point lead after the first with a first quarter score of 17-16.
The Tigers struggled on offense in the second quarter and were held to 9 points scored in the frame. The Owls extended their lead and had a six-point lead heading into the half.
Wewoka used the break to settle down and regroup. The Tigers rallied back on offense and closed the gap by two points at the end of the third quarter.
The battle had just begun as the Tigers continued with their momentum into the final quarter and tied things up 55 to 55 at the 4:40 mark.
Wewoka finally took the lead in the game for the first time by one point at the 3:40 mark. Wewoka continued to apply the pressure on offense with time running out and extended their lead 60-55 with 1:55 left in the game.
The Fairview Owls found their three-point range and scored a few treys and shots from the free throw line to close the gap to 64-63 in favor of Wewoka with 23 seconds remaining. The Owls regained the lead with four seconds left in the game and were fouled. Fairview made the free throw, and Wewoka could not make the shot to send it into overtime.
The Fairview Owls won the game 67-64.
“This was one fun and exciting year for us this 2025-2026 team will always be at the top of the list for me,” stated Head Coach Deauntre Roberts.
“To the seniors, thank you for trusting and believing the process and restoring the pride that was missing in our tow. From 1-9, 8-17, 8-17, to 24-8 and a state semifinals appearance, y’all reminded me why I got in the coaching business to begin with. I love y’all and I’ll be here for you until the end of my time.
To the returners, we know what we have to do to get back here. Take what you learned from this year, it starts in the summer. Be leaders and also be different, never regular. We will be back. I love y’all and can’t wait to get back to work.
To the up and coming, you’re not just joining a team, you’re joining a brotherhood that’s everlasting.” – Coach Roberts.
The Wewoka Tigers ended their basketball season with a 24-8 season record and this year marked the 27th State Tournament appearance for Wewoka.
