Varnum Wins First Home Game of the New Year Against Macomb

The Varnum Whippets hosted the Macomb Hornets Tuesday night for their first home game of the new year. Varnum protected their home court with victories in the girls’ and boys’ games.

The Lady Whippets started the evening off and took control of the game in the first quarter, going on a 25-11 run.

The Lady Hornets tried to rally back in the second with 16 points scored but the Varnum offense kept rolling into the break.

Macomb was down by 17 points heading into the third quarter.

The defense of the Lady Hornets held Varnum to 14 points scored in the third but still had a mountain to climb.

The Lady Whippets stepped up their defense in the final frame and held the Lady Hornets to 5 points in the quarter to cruise in for the win.

The final score of the game was 74-45 Varnum Lady Whippets.

Leading for Varnum was Ashlyn White-Richards with 16 points, four threepoint shots, one assist, one rebound and five steals.

Faith Madkins had 16 points, two assists, eleven rebounds, one block, one steal and was two of eight from the free throw line.

Makiyah Coker had 15 points, six treys, two assists, ten rebounds, seven steals and was three of four from the line.

The Varnum Whippets hit the court next and were ready to play.

Varnum dominated the game from the jump. The Whippet defense suffocated the Hornets in the first and went on a 26-7 run to start the game.

Macomb managed to score 16 points in their battle against the Whippets, but the offensive attack continued and Varnum took a huge lead into the break.

The Hornets were down by 24 points heading into the third quarter. The Whippets continued with their game plan on offense and extended their lead in the quarter.

The gap was now by 33 points heading into the final quarter. Varnum eased off the gas and coasted in for the win. The Hornets went on a 12-4 run, but they weren’t even close to catch Varnum.

Final score of the game, 70-45 Varnum Whippets.

Leading for Varnum was Cooper Smith with 14 points, three treys, one assist, two rebounds, two steals and was one of two from the free throw line.

Evan Wise had 13 points, one trey and three rebounds.

Jon Madkins had 13 points, one assist, fourteen rebounds, one block, two steals and was three of five from the line.

The next game for Varnum is a home game tonight against Moss. Friday night’s game will also be Senior Night for Varnum The game is set to start at 6:30 p.m. with the Lady Whippets starting the evening off followed by the Whippets.
