Varnum Win Homecoming Games Friday Night

The Varnum Whippets hosted the in-county Bowlegs Bison for their homecoming game Friday night.

Varnum elected Katherine Morgan as their Queen and Adrian Vigil as their King.

The Varnum Whippet boys started the evening off against the Bison boys. The Whippets took off with a commanding lead in the first with a 25-4 in the frame.

The Bison boys fired back in the second to close the gap some, but the offense of the Whippets continued with their pressure and held their lead before the half.

Bowlegs was down by 23 with a halftime score of 16-39 Varnum.

The Bison continued with their second quarter game plan and scored 12 points in the third quarter to help keep Bowlegs in the game.

Varnum found their rhythm again and lit up the scoreboard with 18 points in the third. The defense of the Whippets stepped up their game in the final frame and held the Bison to only 9 points in the quarter.

The Whippets protected their home court with 20 points scored and cruised in for the win.

The Varnum Whippets won on homecoming night with a final score of 77-37.

The Bowlegs Bison had 5 three-point shots in the game, 29 rebounds and 6 turnovers.

Scoring for Varnum was CJ Bernard with 19 points, one trey, 8 shots in the paint, 4 rebounds and one steal.

Jon Madkins had 14 points, 6 in the paint, 4 assists, 10 rebounds, 5 blocks, 3 steals and was 2 of 2 from the free throw line.

Kylan Mack had 12 points, 2 treys, 2 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals and was 2 of 2 from the line.

The Lady Whippets took to the court next to face the Lady Bison.

The Lady Whippets took the early lead with 18 points scored in the first. The Lady Bison struggled in the first half and found themselves behind by 12 at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams continued the battle in the second with the Lady Bison stepping up and holding the Lady Whippets to 10 points scored but Varnum still had a sizable lead at the break.

Bowlegs Lady Bison were looking at a 20-point deficit heading into the third quarter.

The Lady Bison gained some momentum in the third and scored 8 points while keeping up with their defensive pressure on Varnum. The Lady Whippets continued to light up the scoreboard with 12 points in the third.

The Lady Whippets returned to their offensive attack in the final frame to go on a 14-6 run to seal the win on their homecoming game.

The final score of the game was 54-22 Varnum Lady Whippets.

The Bowlegs Lady Bison had 10 shots made in the paint, 27 rebounds, 3 blocks and 10 turnovers.

Scoring for the Lady Whippets was Jazmyn Williams with 10 points, 5 shots in the paint, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

Miley Wildcat had 9 points, 4 in the paint, 8 rebounds, 1 block and was 1 for 3 from the line.

Jenna Lofton had 8 points, 2 treys, 2 assists, 2 rebounds and 5 steals.

Next up for Varnum is an away game on the 17th against Lexington.

The next home game will be on the 21st of January against Paden.

The game is set to start at 6:30 p.m.
