Varnum Whippets Win Wetumka Baseball Tournament
The Varnum Whippets baseball team traveled to Wetumka for their annual baseball tournament this past weekend.
The Whippets swept the competition all three days to win the Wetumka Tournament Championship.
On Thursday, Varnum faced the Wewoka Tigers and dominated the game 16-3 with everyone on the Whippet team scoring two runs each except two players.
On Friday, the Whippets took on Wetumka and continued their winning streak with a 14-6 final score. Devyn Fullbright and Chance Winsett scored 3 runs each while pitcher Cooper Smith Allowed 6 runs over three innings, striking out five and walking five.
For the championship game, the Varnum Whippets faced the Konawa Tigers on Saturday.
The Whippets took to the plate first and went three and out in the inning. The Tigers also struggled and went scoreless.
Both team’s defenses battled in the second as both went scoreless.
At the top of the third inning, Varnum got on the board when Kylan Mack scored on a fly ball and Brayden Goodwin scored on a wild pitch to take the lead.
The Tiger offense struggled in the third and went scoreless.
The Whippets went back to work at the top of the fourth when Ben Suarez scored on a passed ball, Winsett and Goodwin scored on a fly ball, Fullbright scored on a ground ball and Payton Romines also scored on a ground ball to extend their lead.
The Konawa Tigers had no answer in the fourth inning and went three and out.
Varnum sealed the win at the top of the fifth with Mack scoring on a sacrifice fly by Fullbright.
The Tigers had one more time at bat to try and make a comeback rally but with no avail. The Varnum Whippets posted a shut out in the championship game with a final score of 8-0 to with the Wetumka Annual Baseball Tournament Championship.
Pitching for Varnum was Payton Romines who pitched 5 innings, allowing zero runs, striking out 5 and walking zero.
Varnum Whippets Kylan Mack, Payton Romines and Brayden Goodwin were named to the All-Tournament Team. Varnum has won 13 straight games now.
Next up for the Whippets is a home game on the 14th against Allen. The game is set to start at 4:30 p.m. with the junior high starting first and the high school following directly after.
