Varnum Whippets Win on the Road at New Lima

The Varnum Whippets baseball team traveled to Falcon Country on Monday and took on New Lima and came away with the victory on the road.

The visiting Whippets went to bat first and got on the board when Payton Romines scored on a steal of home. Next to bat was the Falcons. New Lima also got on the board in the first when Will Mayfield scored on a ground to tie the game.

Varnum went to work in the second inning when Cooper Smith and Brayden Goodwin scored on a line drive, Devyn Fullbright scored on a on fielder’s choice, Kylan Mack scored on a sacrifice and Montesino scored on a ground ball.

The Falcons were down by six heading into the bottom of the second. New Lima closed the gap when Logan Peffley scored on a line drive, Justin Spencer scored on a ground, Bear Colbert scored on a sacrifice fly and Mayfield scored on a fly ball.

The Whippets still had a lead by two heading into the third.

The Whippets went back to work and scored ten runs to take a commanding lead.

Goodwin and Smith scored on a line drive, Fullbright scored on a fielder’s choice, Mack scored on a sacrifice fly, Montesino scored on a wild pitch, Chance Winsett scored on a wild pitch, Cooper and Smith scored on a line drive, Goodwin scored on a ground ball and Fullbright scored on a line drive.

New Lima battled back and Peffley scored on a ground after their second out. Ray scored on a passed ball, but the Falcons got their third out.

Varnum stepped back up to the plate and Cooper and Xavier Harjo scored on a ground ball, Smith scored on a fly ball, Goodwin and Fullbright scored on a passed ball, Romines scored on a line drive and Benjamin Suarez scored on a walk.

New Lima went to bat one more time and got a run with Logan Heard scoring on a fly ball.

The game was called with Varnum winning with a final score of 23-9.

Pitching for New Lima was Ty Martin who pitched one 2/3 innings, allowing six runs, striking out two and walking four.

Pitching for Varnum was Kylan Mack who pitched four innings, allowing nine runs, striking out three and walking four.

Next up for New Lima is a home game on the 24th against Wetumka. The game is set to start at 4 p.m. starting with the junior high.

Next up for Varnum is Union City Festival the 20th through the 21st. The next home game is on the 25th against Konawa. The game is set to start at 4:40 p.m. starting with the junior high.
