Varnum Whippets Win on the Road at Macomb Tuesday
The Varnum Whippets are back in action after the snow canceled their Mulhollad- Orlando Tournament last weekend with two wins on the road at Macomb Tuesday.
Varnum also saw some basketball action on Saturday for their own Varnum Winter Storm Festival. The Whippets played Glencoe.
The Lady Whippets started the evening off and took the early lead with an 18-7 run in the first.
The Macomb Lady Hornets fired right back in the second and closed the gap to make it a game. Their defense held Varnum to only 9 points scored and were down by 10 at the break.
The Lady Hornets were still riding on their momentum, going into the third and outscored the Lady Whippets, going on an 11-10 run in the quarter.
The Varnum Lady Whippets settled down and went back to work in the final quarter. The defense of Varnum held the Lady Hornets to just 6 points in the fourth while putting up 17 to get their 10th win of the season.
The Varnum Lady Whippets won 54-34.
Katherine Morgan led Varnum in scoring with 14 points, one three-point shot, 3 assists, 8 rebounds, 4 steals and was 3 of 5 from the free throw line.
Maegan Wildcat had 13 points, one trey, 4 assists, 7 rebounds, 4 steals and was 4 of 6 from the line.
Ashlyn White-Richards had 12 points, one trey, one assist, two rebounds and was 5 of 8 from the line.
The Varnum Lady Whippets are now 10-4 on the season.
The undefeated Varnum boys hit the court next to take on the Macomb Hornets.
The Hornets entered the game 5-7 on the season.
The Whippets jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Varnum dominated the first quarter, going on a 26-6 run. The defense of Varnum frustrated the offense of Macomb. The Hornet were held to only 4 points in the second frame.
Varnum continued with their offensive pressure and racked up 21 more points before the break.
The Whippets had a sizable lead heading into the third period. The Hornets fought back in the second half but continued to struggle on offense.
The Whippets stuck with their game plan and used their first half momentum in the third quarter and tacked on 27 more points to put the game out of reach.
The Hornets managed 10 points in the final quarter as the Whippets let off the gas and coasted in for the win. The Varnum Whippets won 91-30 over Macomb. The Whippets remain undefeated and are ranked #3 in Class B by the OSSAA.
C.J. Bernard led the field for Varnum with 23 points, two three-point shots, one assist, seven rebounds, one steal and was one for one from the free throw line.
Daison Hadley had 10 points, two treys, 5 assists, 2 rebounds and 4 steals.
Kylan Mack had 9 points, 2 assists, 6 rebounds, 2 steals and was one of four from the line.
Adrian Vigil got 8 points, two treys, 2 assists, 3 rebounds and one steal.
