Varnum Whippets Win Regional Championship at Home
The Varnum Whippets held the Regional Playoffs at their home gym this past weekend and came away with the Regional Championship Monday night.
The Varnum Lady Whippets started out their regional playoffs against Pittsburg Friday night. The games were postponed due to the weather.
The Lady Whippets jumped out to an early lead in the first with a 14-12 run. The Pittsburg Lady Panthers rallied back in the second and had a one-point lead at the half.
Both teams stepped up their offenses in the third and the Lady Whippets closed up the gap and tied things up at the end of the third.
The game was tied at 40 points apiece heading into the final quarter. The defenses came alive from both sides, but the Lady Whippets edged out the Lady Panthers by four points to win the game 50-46.
Scoring for the Lady Whippets was Maegan Wildcat with 11 points, one three-point shots, 3 assists, one rebound, one steal and was two of six from the free throw line.
Katherine Morgan scored 9 points, one trey, 4 assists, 9 rebounds and was two of two from the line.
Ashlyn White-Richards scored 8 points, one trey, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and was one of two from the foul line.
The Varnum Whippet boys faced the Tupelo Tigers on Friday evening in their first round of Regionals.
The Tigers came to play and matched the Whippets basket for basket in the first.
The game was tied heading into the second quarter. Varnum attacked Tupelo on offense and outscored the Tigers in a 17-6 run in the second.
Varnum had an 11-point lead heading into the third quarter. Both teams stepped up their offenses in the quarter, but the Whippets continued to extend their lead.
The Tigers were looking at a 15-point deficit heading into the final quarter. The Tupelo Tigers continued with their offensive momentum, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Whippet lead. The Varnum Whippets won 63-55.
Scoring for the Whippets was C.J. Bernard with 25 points, 2 assists, 9 rebounds, 1 steal and was 7 of 9 from the foul line.
Jon Madkins scored 9 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks and was one for one from the line.
Daison Hadley scored 9 points, one assist, two rebounds, two steals and was five of six from the line.
The Lady Whippets had moved on to face the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs for the Regional Championship Monday evening. Varnum struggled in the first as the Lady Bulldogs took the lead with 19 points scored.
The Lady Whippets were down by 13, heading into the second quarter. Something happened to the Lady Whippets as the defense of the Lady Bulldogs held Varnum to just four points scored in the quarter. The offense of Whitesboro took advantage and dominated the quarter with 21 points scored.
The problem Varnum was facing wasn’t getting any easier as the Lady Whippets were plagued with turnovers. Whitesboro seemed to be in the right place at the right time for Varnum’s passes. Varnum scored 9 points in the frame but were still fighting an uphill battle.
The deficit now grew to 39 points for the Lady Whippets heading into the final quarter. The game had no magical ending for Varnum as the Lady Whippets fell 25-66.
The Varnum Lady Whippets will move on and play tonight against Dover at the Seminole High School gym at 6 p.m.
The Varnum Whippet boys took on the Moyer Tigers Monday evening for the Regional Championship. The Tigers matched basket for basket with the Whippets in the first. Varnum pulled away at the end of the quarter to take the lead by four.
The Moyer Tigers fired back in the second and fell short of one point of tying the game at the break.
The defense of the Whippets stepped up their game in the third and held the Tigers to only 6 points scored. The offense continued to roll and added to their lead with 19 points scored.
The Tigers were down by 14 points heading into the final frame. The Tigers battled to the end, but the Whippets never let off the gas and cruised in for the win with a final score of 80-58.
The Whippets will play Dover on Friday the 28th at 7:30 p.m. at the Seminole High school gym. The winner of the game will advance to State.
