Varnum Whippets Travel to Cashion for County Line Basketball Tournament

Varnum travelled to Cashion this past weekend to participate in the Cashion County Line Basketball Tournament.

The Varnum Lady Whippets started the tournament off Thursday facing the Fairview Lady Yellowjackets. The Lady Yellowjackets dominated the first half and were up 46-15 at the break. The Lady Whippets continued to struggle in the second half and fell 31-77. Jazmyn Williams of Varnum scored 11 points in the game.

The Varnum Whippet boys also started off their tournament facing the Fairview Yellowjacket boys Thursday. The Whippets jumped out to an early lead in the first going on a 13-5 run. Fairview fired back in the second and closed the gap by two at the break.

The third quarter was a tough battle with the Whippets taking a 3-point lead into the final quarter. Varnum lost their edge and fell to the Yellowjackets 52-66. C.J. Bernard had 21 points in the game.

The Lady Whippets faced the Lone Grove Lady Horns Friday in their second round. The first quarter was a tough match-up but the Lady Horns edged out Varnum 14-10 to take the lead.

The defense of Lone Grove frustrated the Lady Whippets throughout the rest of the game and the Lone Grove Lady Horns won 61-30. Ashlyn-White Richards scored 8 points in the game.

The Varnum Whippet boys took on the Perry Maroons Friday in their second round. Varnum dominated the first quarter and went on a 21-3 run to take the lead. The Whippets controlled the rest of the game and won with a final score of 67-36. Jon Madkins scored 16 points in the game.

The Lady Whippets played for seventh place against the Clinton Lady Red Tornados Saturday morning. Clinton jumped out to big lead in the first, but the Lady Whippets settled down and came back in the second.

The Lady Whippets were down by 2 at the break.

Varnum continued with their momentum in the third and went on a 18-8 run to extend their lead. Clinton rallied late but could not catch Varnum before the end of regulation. Varnum Lady Whippets won 57-49.

“We got off to a rough start in this one, but I was really proud of the way the girls stayed together, kept working, kept grinding and found a way to go get this win,” stated Head Coach Jon Hadley.

Ashlyn White-Richards led for Varnum with 23 points.

The Varnum Whippets faced the Lone Grove Longhorn boys for third place Saturday. The Whippets dominated the first half by going on a 22-8 run in the first and a 20-7 run in the second. Lone Grove rallied back with 13 points in the third, but the Whippets kept the lead out of reach for the Longhorns. The Longhorns could not catch the Whippets and Varnum won the game and won 3rd place with a final score of 67-41.

Leading for Varnum was C.J. Bernard with 22 points.

Trenton Mack had 14 points in the game.
