Varnum Whippets Stay Undefeated; Lady Whippets Fall

The Varnum Whippets held their second game at home Tuesday night, hosting the Academy of OKC Griffins.

The Whippets boys stay undefeated, and the Lady Whippets suffered a close loss to the Academy.

The Varnum Lady Whippets were coming off from a close loss to Caney last Friday and were looking for some redemption. The Academy of OKC entered the game 2-0 on the season.

The Academy jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter with Sydney Kitchen scoring 6 points for the Lady Griffins.

The Lady Whippets started out slow on offense, but a three-point shot from Shysie Harjo got the home crowd fired up.

Varnum was down by 4 points heading into the second quarter.

The Lady Griffins continued with their offensive pressure and scored 14 more points to add to their lead.

Varnum couldn’t find their rhythm in the first half. Maegan Wildcat helped the Whippets stay in the game with a trey of her own.

At the break, the Lady Whippets were down 26-15.

Varnum Head Coach Jon Hadley got his girls fired up in the second half. Harjo and Ashlyn Richards each knocked down a three-point shot in the third frame to close the gap for Varnum.

The Lady Whippets were down by 12 heading into the final quarter.

Varnum outscored the Lady Griffins in the fourth with Ashlyn Ricards knocking down a trey and Miley Wildcat scoring 8 points. The Lady Whippets found their rhythm and had the momentum, but time ran out for the Lady Whippets.

The Academy of OKC won the game with a final score of 48-41.

The Lady Griffins had 41 rebounds and 14 turnovers in the game.

For the Lady Whippets, Ashlyn White-Richards scored 14 points, 2 threepoint shots, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, 4 steals and was 2 of 4 from the foul line.

Shysie Harjo scored 10 points, 2 three-point shots, 1 assist, 4 rebounds and 1 steal.

Miley Wildcat scored 8 points, 2 rebounds and one steal.

The Lady Whippets are now 3-3 on the season.

The Varnum Whippet boys were pumped up and ready to play the Academy Griffins next.

The Varnum Whippet boys are still undefeated after beating Caney 65-25 last Friday night and were looking to protect their home court.

The Academy of OKC were 2-0 heading into the game Tuesday night.

The game was a battle of defenses as no one scored in the first half of the quarter. The Whippets scored the first basket, and the Griffins fired right back at the 4:12 minute mark. Then the game went back and forth on offense, but the Whippets edged out the Griffins with Daison Hadley and Kylan Mack knocking down a three-point shot each to go on a 15 to 12 run in the first.

Varnum struggled on offense in the second as the Griffins continued with their offensive strategy and outscored the Whippets 10-7 in the frame.

The game was tied up at the break 22-22.

The battle continued in the third as both teams traded punches. The game stayed tied up much throughout the quarter. It was 29 to 29 at the 4-minute mark. The Griffins edged out Varnum by two points at the end of the third.

The Whippets buckled down and went into overdrive on offense and dominated the fourth quarter. The Griffins fought hard as well and scored a game high of 15 points in the quarter.

Varnum made all their shots count and almost doubled the Griffins points with 28 points scored in the final frame.

Varnum remains undefeated and is 6-0 heading into the Thanksgiving break. The final score of the game was Varnum 61 and Academy of OKC 50.

The Griffins had 20 rebounds and 10 turnovers in the game.

For the Whippets, Jon Madkins scored 17 points, one assist, 5 rebounds, 1 block, 2 steals and was 3 of 4 from the line.

C. J. Bernard scored 11 points, 3 three-point shots, 2 assists and 2 rebounds.

Trenton Mack scored 11 points, one trey, 2 assists and 2 rebounds.

The Varnum Whippets and Lady Whippets don’t compete until after the Thanksgiving break. Varnum will be competing in the LRC Tournament at the Seminole High School gym on December 2-7.
