Varnum Whippets Have Big Wins on the Road Tuesday
Varnum traveled to Bulldog Territory Tuesday night to take on 3A Lexington in their second to their last game before the Christmas break.
The Varnum Lady Whippets hit the court first to face the Lady Bulldogs. Varnum took control of the game in the first with a 15-4 run to start things off.
The Lady Bulldogs struggled in the first half and made a slow comeback in the second quarter. The Lady Whippets had a 26-14 lead heading into the half.
The Lady Bulldogs fired back in the second half and their defense held the Lady Whippets to 8 points scored while going on a 17-8 run in the third quarter to close the gap.
Lexington continued with their momentum in the fourth, scoring 17 points again, trying to catch the Lady Whippets. Varnum stepped up their offense and held off the Lady Bulldogs for their fifth straight win 51-48.
Scoring for Varnum was Katherine Morgan with 17 points, one three-point shot, 4 assists, 7 rebounds, 5 shots made in the paint, 1 steal and was 4 of 4 from the free throw line.
Maegan Wildcat had 10 points, 3 three-point shots, 1 assist, 2 rebounds, 1 steal and was one of four from the line.
Shysie Harjo and Miley Wildcat each scored 6 points in the game.
Next up was the Varnum Whippet boys and the Lexington Bulldogs. Lexington jumped out to the early lead with 16 points scored in the first. Varnum had put up 11 points to keep the game close.
Both defenses stepped up their pressure in the second. Varnum edged out the Bulldogs 9-6 to close the gap by 2.
The Whippets came out of the half on fire and dominated the third quarter with a 22-7 run to take control of the game.
The Lexington Bulldogs tried to rally back in the fourth, but the Whippets traded shots with them and cruised in for the win.
The final score of the game was 58-44 Varnum Whippets. The Varnum Whippets are undefeated on the season with a 11-0 record.
Scoring for Varnum was Kylan Mack with 24 points, 6 shots made inside the paint, 1 assist, 5 rebounds, 1 block, 3 steals and was 12 for 12 from the free throw line.
Jon Madkins had 16 points, 8 shots in the paint, 1 assist, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks and one steal.
CJ Bernard had 11 points, one trey, 3 shots in the paint, 3 assists, 7 rebounds, 1 block, 2 steals and was 2 of 4 from the line.
Next up for Varnum is the Mulhall-Orlando Tournament on the 9th through the 11th of January.
The next home game is on the 21st against Paden. The game is set to start at 6 :30 p.m.
