Varnum Whippets and Lady Whippets Win Districts

The Whippet Nation won big earlier this week in both baseball and softball slowpitch games by winning District Championships in both categories.

The Varnum Lady Whippets hosted their districts at the FIrelake Ballfields against Timberlake Tuesday because their field was too wet from the weekend rain to play on their own home field Monday.

The Timberlake Lady Tigers posted a shutout in the first matchup between the teams. Timberlake scored four runs in the first, one in the second and three in the third to win 8-0.

In the second game, the Lady Tigers went threeand-out at the top of the inning. The Lady Whippets took advantage and took the early when Maegan Wildcat scored on a line drive, Jenna Lofton scored on a missed throw, Karsyn Lowery scored on an error Katherine Morgan scored on a error and Shysie Harjo scored on a line drive.

The defense of Varnum held the Lady Tigers scoreless in the second inning and dominated the inning at bat when Shayla Gavin scored on a fly ball, Wildcat scored on an error and Lofton scored on a ground ball, Morgan scored on a line drive, Lowry scored on a line drive and Wildcat and Harjo scored on an error.

The Lady Tigers were down by 12 runs heading into the third. Timberlake got on board with three runs at the top of the inning. Varnum went three-and-out in the inning.

Timberlake wanted to close the gap at the top of the fourth but went scoreless instead. The Lady Whippets sealed the win with Wildcat scoring a run on a fly ball to win the game 13-3.

Pitching for Varnum was Karsyn Lowery who pitched four innings, allowing three runs, striking out zero and walking three.

Now the teams played for the District Championship with one win each under their belts. Both teams fought hard in the first two innings as neither team scored a run.

Timberlake went scoreless at the top of the third and it was the Lady Whippets that got on the board first with Gavin scoring on a line drive, Bristol Lewis scored on an error, Lofton scored on a ground ball, Wildcat scored on a fly ball, Lowry scored on a walk and Harjo scored on a fly.

The Wildcats could not get things going on offense and went three-and-out in the fourth. Varnum posted a shutout when Wildcat and Morgan scored on a ground ball.

The Varnum Lady Whippets won the Class B District Championship with a final score of 8-0.

Pitching for Varnum was Karsyn Lowery who pitched five innings, allowing zero runs, striking out one and walking zero.

The Varnum Whippet boys moved their game with the Oilton Panthers from Wednesday to Tuesday because of future rain predictions.

Varnum hosted the playoff games, and the Panthers went up to bat first and got on board with a single run in the inning. The Whippets answered right back with a run by Devyn Fullbright off a line drive.

The defense of the Whippets held the Panthers scoreless in the second. Varnum scored two runs in the second when Jon Madkins scored on an error and Brayden Goodwin scored on the same error.

Neither team scored in the third inning. Oilton could not get their offense going in the fourth and went three-and-out.

Varnum scored a single run in the fourth and fifth innings by Goodwin and Chance Winsett. Oilton struggled throughout the rest of the game with zero runs and the Whippets applied the pressure in the bottom of the sixth with Aiden Cooper scoring on a sacrifice fly, Jones and Madkins scored on a walk and Goodwin and Winsett scored on an error.

The Whippets won 10-1. Pitching for Varnum was Aiden Cooper who pitched six innings, allowing one run, striking out 13 and walking one.

Varnum had had 1-0 lead in the playoffs and faced the Panthers one more time for the District Championship.

The game only lasted three innings as the Whippets posted a shutout.

In the first inning, the Panthers went three-andout while the Whippets jumped out to an early lead with nothing but home runs in the inning. Fullbright knocked an inside the park home run right at the first bat, Cooper homers on a fly ball and knocks in Payton Romines and Madkins homers on a fly ball.

The Panthers had no answer in the second. The Whippets took full advantage and put the game away with nine runs in the inning. Winsett scored on a walk, Goodwin scored on a error, Fullbright scored on a walk, Kyle Navrath, Cooper and Romines scored on an error, Jones scored on a passed ball and Kylan Mack and Madkins scored on a line drive.

The Oilton Panthers gave it one more try but came away with zero runs and the game was over.

The Varnum Whippets won the Class B District Championship with a final score of 13-0.

Pitching for Varnum was Payton Romines who pitched three innings, allowing zero runs, striking out three and walking zero.

Regional assignments have not came out yet but will be posted in the paper when it does.
