Varnum Whippets and Lady Whippets are District Champions
The Varnum Whippets started their district playoffs at Macomb this past weekend.
The schools participating at Macomb were Bowlegs, Butner, Macomb and Varnum.
The Varnum Lady Whippets started on Thursday evening facing the Butner Lady Eagles. The Lady Whippets dominated the game from the jump. The defense of Varnum held the Lady Eagles scoreless in the first quarter.
Varnum had a commanding 32-0 lead heading into the second. Butner managed to put three points on the board as the Lady Whippets backed off on offense in the frame.
The third quarter didn’t look any better for the Lady Eagles as they went scoreless in the frame. The Lady Whippets went back to work on offense and put the game out of reach with 21 points scored. Everyone that was in uniform scored.
The Varnum Lady Whippets coasted in for the win in their first round of the district playoffs with a final score of 76-4.
Leading for the Lady Whippets was Maegan Wildcat with 18 points, one three-point shot, 1 assist, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and was one for one from the foul line.
Shysie Harjo had 9 points, 2 treys, one assist, one rebound, 5 steals and was one for one from the foul line.
Ashlyn White-Richards scored 9 points, one trey, 4 assists, 5 rebounds, 1 block and 5 steals.
The Varnum Whippets played the Butner Eagle boys on Friday night.
Varnum took the lead early in the game and didn’t look back. The Whippets went on a 25-3 run in the first.
The second quarter was a replay of the first with the Whippets applying the pressure on offense.
Varnum had a 39-point lead at the break.
The Eagles never gave up and continued to fight throughout the second half. Varnum extended their lead with 22 points scored in the third.
The Eagles put up 10 points in the final frame as the Varnum Whippets won the 22nd game of the season and advanced to the next round of the playoffs with a final score of 85-23.
Leading for Varnum was C.J. Bernard with 13 points, two treys, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and was one for two from the foul line.
Jon Madkins scored 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 steals and was 3 of 4 from the line.
Kamell Stewart scored 10 points, two treys, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.
The Varnum Lady Whippets faced the Macomb Lady Hornets for the District Championship on Saturday and won 66-53 and the Varnum Whippets faced the Bowlegs Bison for the District Championship and won 91-26.
Both teams advance to the Regional playoffs this weekend at Varnum the 20th through the 22nd.
