Varnum Starts Basketball Season with Road Win

The Varnum Whippets and Lady Whippets kicked off their basketball season Friday night with a road win at New Lima.

The New Lima Falconettes and Varnum Lady Whippets started the evening off first with an evenly match first quarter. The game was tied 0-0 heading into the second.

The Lady Whippets settled down and went to work and scored 16 points in the quarter. The Falconettes were struggling but got on the board with 3 points before the half.

Varnum came out from the half and continued where they left off on offense and put up 20 more points in the third. The Lady Falcons continued to struggle on offense in the quarter as the Lady Whippets defense had three blocks and 25 steals in the game.

The New Lima Falconettes found some momentum in the final series and put up 12 points. The Lady Whippets eased up a little in the last quarter but still added 12 more points to their lead.

Time ran out on New Lima’s momentum and the Varnum Lady Whippets won 48-19.

The New Lima Falconettes were 8 of 18 from the foul line with five threepoints shots made. The defense had 31 rebounds, 3 blocks with 15 turnovers.

For the Lady Whippets, Katherine Morgan had 15 points, two threepoint shots, 4 assists, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 steals and was 3 of 3 from the foul line.

Shysie Harjo had 11 points, one threepoint shot, 3 assists, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and was 2 of 2 from the line.

Jenna Lofton had 6 points, one three-point shot, 2 rebounds, 2 steals and was 3 of 4 from the line.

Next up was the New Lima Falcons taking on the Varnum Whippets.

The Whippets came to play and took a commanding lead in the first quarter with 32 points scored.

The New Lima Falcons found a little daylight and lit up the score board with 6 points in the second.

Varnum added to their lead with 17 more points before the half.

The score at the break was Varnum 49, New Lima 7.

The Falcons had no answer for Varnum and only managed 4 points in the second half.

Varnum continued with their offensive game plan and scored 18 points in the third and 12 in the fourth.

The Varnum Whippet boys posted a land-slide victory with the final score of 79-11.

New Lima was 1 of 8 from the foul line, 3 threepoint shots, 18 rebounds, one block and had 9 turnovers.

For the Whippet boys, Christian Brager had 15 points, 5 three-point shots, 6 rebounds, 2 steals and was 5 of 5 from the free throw line.

Ruben Zapata had 12 points, 3 three-point shots, 2 assists, 2 rebounds and was 4 of 5 from the line.

C.J. Bernard had 8 points, 4 three-point shots, one assist, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.

Next up for New Lima is an away game at Mason on the of November. The next home game is on the 12th against Earlsboro. The game is set start at 6:30 p.m.
