The Varnum Whippets took on the Hominy Bucks at a neutral site in Oilton Saturday evening.

This was the last game of the regular season for the Varnum Lady Whippets as they hit the court against the Lady Bucks.

The Lady Whippets struggled in the first and fell behind as Hominy went on a 18-8 run in the quarter.

Varnum regrouped after the first and came back in the second quarter. The Defense of the Lady Whippets held the Lady Bucks to just four points scored while the offense tied things up before the half.

The score was 22-22 at the break.

Both defenses stepped up in the third. Varnum managed to go up by one after the third quarter.

The slugfest continued into the fourth quarter as the offenses lit up the score board on both sides.

The Hominy Lady Bucks prevailed and came out on top in a nail-biting match with a final score of 44-43.

Hominy shot 67% from the foul line with 30 rebounds and 12 turnovers.

Leading for the Lady Whippets was Ashlyn White-Richards with 12 points, two three-point shots, 5 rebounds, 5 steals and was two for two from the foul line.

Maegan Wildcat scored 10 points, two treys, 3 assists, 4 rebounds, one block, two steals and was four of five from the line.

Jenna Lofton scored 8 points, two treys, 2 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals.

The Varnum Lady Whippets finished 14-9 in their regular season with 5 of 9 losses by single digits.

Next up was the #2 Varnum Whippets against the #13 Hominy Bucks.

The Whippets took off with an early lead with a 12-6 run in the first.

Things got rolling on offense from both sides in the second. Varnum continued to make their shots count and extended their lead by 10 at the half.

Both teams struggled on offense in the third as the game became a defensive game as both teams rallied up 6 points apiece.

The Hominy Bucks fired back in the fourth quarter and closed the gap. Hominy’s rally wasn’t enough to overcome their deficit before the end of regulation.

The Varnum Whippets won 44-39. The boys finish their regular season going 21-2.

Hominy had 31 rebounds, 5 blocks and 10 turnovers.

Leading for Varnum was C. J. Bernard with 19 points, two treys, 2 assists, 5 rebounds, 1 block, 2 steals and was 3 of 4 from the foul line.

Jon Madkins scored 11 points, 2 assists, 13 rebounds, 5 blocks and was one of two from the line.

Kylan Mack had 9 points, 3 assists, 7 rebounds and was one of two from the line.

Next up for Varnum is districts. Varnum will be playing at Macomb on the 13th through the 15th.

The Varnum Lady Whippets will play on the 13th against Butner at 6 p.m.

The Varnum Whippets will play on the 14th against Butner at 6 p.m.

Winner of these games will play Saturday at 6p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
