Varnum Host Strother Friday Night for Senior Night
The Varnum Whippets hosted the Strother Yellowjackets Friday night for their Senior Night.
Varnum honored 14 seniors before the games started. Seniors were escorted by their parents.
The Lady Whippets hit the court first to take on the Strother Lady Yellowjackets.
The game started with a fast pace from both sides. The Lady Yellowjackets made a few more of their baskets count to take the lead in the first.
Defense played a big role in the second. Both teams struggled on offense and barely lit up the scoreboard.
At the break, the Lady Yellowjackets had the lead with a score of 14 to 9.
Both teams stepped up their offenses in the third. Strother just edged out Varnum by three points to add to their lead.
The Varnum Lady Whippets were looking at an 8-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter.
Both teams battled in the final frame, down to the end of regulation. The Strother Lady Yellowjackets won on the road with a final score of 38-28.
The Lady Yellowjackets was 6 of 12 from the free throw line with 34 rebounds and 3 blocks in the game.
Leading for the Lady Whippets was Katherine Morgan with 11 points, one trey, two assists, one rebound, one block and 2 steals.
Jazmyn Williams got 6 points, 1 assist, 1 rebound, 1 block and 3 steals.
Shysie Harjo had 5 points, one trey, 1 assist, 7 rebounds and one steal.
Next up was the Varnum Whippet boys and the Strother Yellowjacket boys.
The Whippets struggled on offense in the first while the Yellowjackets took the early lead with Michael Kanard scoring 5 points to help Strother go on a 9-4 run in the frame.
Varnum settled down and took control of the second quarter with Kylan Mack knocking down 3 three-point shots and Trenton Mack finding his threepoint range in the quarter to lift the Whippet to a 35-18 lead at the half.
In the third, Kayden Schultz of Strother hit his second three-point in the game to fire up the visiting Yellowjacket fans, but the Whippets were still riding their momentum from the second and continued with their offensive pressure to extend their lead.
The Strother Yellowjackets had no answer for the Whippets in the final frame. Strother shot one of six from the foul line in the fourth as the Whippets added nine more points to seal the win.
The Varnum Whippets protected their home court with a score of 66-33.
Strother shot 32% in the paint with 23 rebounds and 4 blocks in the game.
Leading for Strother was Kayden Schultz with 12 points, 2 treys and was two of two from the free throw line.
Braiden Teague scored a three and Blayden Turner scored three points in the game.
Leading for Varnum was C.J. Bernard with 24 points, 4 assists, 5 rebounds, 1 block and 3 steals.
Kylan Mack had 12 points, 3 treys, 3 assists, 1 steal and was one of two from the line.
Jon Madkins had 12 points, 6 rebounds and two blocks.
