Varnum Baseball and Softball Teams Win Tuesday

The Varnum Whippets and Lady Whippets both had games Tuesday and came away with wins in both games.

The Varnum Lady Whippets traveled to Falcon country to take on the New Lima Falconettes. Varnum took the early lead in the first with Jenna Lofton and Skyler Yott scoring on a line drive, M. Wildcat scored on a pop fly, Katherine Morgan scored on a line drive, AK Prieto scored on a ground ball and Shysie Harjo scored on a throw.

The Lady Whippets had a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first. The Lady Falcons got on board when Cheyenne Deatherage scored on a line drive, Krissy Griffis scored on a fly ball and Layla Cecil scored on a fly ball.

The defense of New Lima held the Lady Whippets scoreless in the second inning and took advantage in the bottom of the inning when Abigail McCulley scored on a pop fly and Deatherage hit a grand slam with bases loaded knocking in Karli Johnson, Peyton Johnson and Jazzy Harjo to take the lead.

The Lady Whippets struggled again on offense in the third and went threeand-out. New Lima added to their lead with P. Johnson scoring on a steal of home, Harjo scored on a ground ball and Deatherage scored on a pop fly.

The Falconettes had a five-point lead heading into the fourth with the score 11-6.

The Lady Whippets rallied back in the inning with Shayla Gavin scoring on a ground ball, Morgan hits a home run with the bases loaded, knocking in Lofton, Yott and Wildcat and Prieto and Harjo scored on a fly ball to regain the lead by two.

New Lima struggled in the fifth and went scoreless. Varnum added to the lead with two runs scored by M. Wildcat scoring on an in-field home run and Morgan scoring on a steal of home.

The Falconettes put points back on the board when Deatherage scored on a pop fly and Griffis scored on a steal of home.

Varnum went back to work on offense with M. Wildcat scoring on a fly ball and Lofton scoring on a walk. New Lima were down by 4 runs heading into the bottom of the sixth. Karli Johnson scored on a ground ball but could not add anymore points in the inning.

The Varnum Lady Whippets won on the road with a score of 17-14.

Pitching for New Lima was Layla Cecil who pitched seven innings, allowing 17 runs, striking out none and walking seven.

Pitching for Varnum was Karsyn Lowery who pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing 11 runs, striking out one and walking five. Relief pitcher Ayiana Brown pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs, striking out two and walking three.

Next up for both teams is the LRC Slow-pitch Tournament on the 31st and 1st in Shawnee.

The Falconettes start the tournament on Monday at 4:30 p.m. facing Sasakwa.

The Lady Whippets start the tournament at 7:10 p.m. Monday facing Macomb.

The Varnum Whippets baseball boys were home Tuesday and took on the Konawa Tigers.

Neither team lit up the scoreboard in the first inning as both came to play.

Konawa battled hard and came close to scoring multiple runs, but the defense of the Whippets held them.

Varnum got on board in the second when Alejandro Montesino scored on a passed ball, Xavier Harjo scored on a ground ball and Jon Madkins scored on a line drive.

The frustration on offense for the Tigers continued throughout the game as Konawa went scoreless in the third. Varnum also went three-and-out in the inning.

Konawa had no answer in the fourth for Varnum. The Whippets went to work and dominated the inning with Devin Fullbright scoring on a walk, Payton Romines scored on a walk, Aiden Cooper scored on a passed ball, Kylan Mack scored on a line drive, Montesino scored on a line drive, Harjo scored on a walk and Madkins scored on a ground.

Pitching for Konawa was Tyler Whitley who pitched one 2/3 innings, allowing three runs, striking out one and walking two. Relief pitcher G. Moore pitched one and half innings, allowing five runs and striking out none.

Pitching for Varnum was Payton Romines who pitched 4 innings, allowing zero runs, striking out one and walking two.

Next up for Konawa is the Central Tournament this weekend. The next home game is on the 1st of April against Stratford. The game is set to start at 4:40 p.m. with the junior high starting first and the high school following directly after.

Next up for Varnum is the LRC baseball tournament on the 3rd through the 5th of April in Shawnee. The Whippets start their tournament off on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. against Earlsboro.
