Two College Football Head Coaches Fired on Monday
THE SPUN - The 2024 college football season still has a couple of weeks remaining in the regular season, but it’s a Black Monday in the sport right now.
Two college football head coaches have been fired on Monday morning, according to multiple reports. There are still a couple of weeks remaining in the regular season, as we’re just at the midway point in November, but a couple of programs decided that they had seen enough from their head coaches.
UMass has fired head coach Don Brown, while FAU has fired head coach Tom Herman.
Don Brown, 69, was in his second stint as UMass’s head coach. He took over the program in 2022 and went 6-28 in his second stint with the school. Brown, who had been coaching college football since 1977, previously served as the school’s head coach from 2004-08.
UMass AD Ryan Bamford released a statement on the school’s decision to fire Brown.
“I am extremely grateful to Coach Brown for returning to UMass three years ago to help us build back a program he once coached to a national title game. Don should have immense pride in the outstanding contributions he has made to advance Massachusetts Football during his three stops in Amherst. Upon his return in 2021, we shared a common goal to help UMass football attain conference membership, something that was realized last spring,” he said.
“Largely due to his renowned coaching reputation, Don legitimized our FBS program and Massachusetts football has taken positive steps forward since his return. We are structurally positioned to accomplish our competitive goals as we move into a new league and a new college athletics landscape in 2025.”
Meanwhile, FAU has decided to fire head coach Tom Herman. The former Texas Longhorns head coach took over the program in 2023.
Pete Thamel confirmed the news.
“FAU has fired coach Tom Herman, source confirms. 247 Sports first reported. He has three years left on his contract and is expected to be owed nearly $4 million,” he reported.
There are surely more firings to come. But for now, these two are out on Monday.
