Sulphur Bulldogs Overpower Seminole Chieftains

Posted in:

On Friday, Oct. 25, the 11 ranked Seminole Chieftains welcomed the 3rd ranked Sulphur Bulldogs into Chieftain Stadium for a high stakes district showdown (rankings provided by MaxPreps). The Bulldogs proved to be too much for an injured Seminole squad. As the Chieftains would fall by a score of 49-6, dropping them to 5-3 overall with a 2-3 record in district play.

Seminole would start the game out hot with an opening drive that lasted six minutes, had two converted 4th down attempts, and ended with a seven yard touchdown run by Jay Ladd. After Ladd gave the Chieftains the early 6-0 lead, he would leave the game with an injury and not return.

Sulphur would respond with a long scoring drive of their own. A two-yard touchdown run with 1:47 left in the 1st quarter gave the Bulldogs a 7-6 advantage. The teams would punt back and forth until Sulphur struck again and struck hard. The Bulldogs would score three touchdowns in four minutes and take a 28-6 lead into the half. The Bulldogs would continue right where they left off to start the 3rd quarter, taking the 2nd half opening kickoff back for a 75-yard touchdown. The Chieftains would punt on all three of their 3rd quarter possessions, while Sulphur would score on all of their 3rd quarter possessions. Heading into the final period the Bulldogs held a decisive 49-6 lead.

Only three total drives took place in the final quarter, with the game ending when Sulphur would kneel out the game clock to hand the Chieftains their 3rd loss of 2024. A 49-6 loss at the hands of the Bulldogs. Here is what Head Coach Mike Snyder had to say about his team following the loss. “ You know we just had so many kids injured, we just ran out of bodies. You know our kids always bounce back, we will bounce back the next two ballgames and get it done.”

The Chieftain offense struggled on the night, totaling just 89 total yards. Quarterback Dontre Garfield finished 10-18 passing for 87 yards, while the Chieftain rushing attack combined for just two yards on 20 carries. Jay Ladd scored Seminole’s lone touchdown with a seven-yard run.

The Chieftain defense gave up 250 total yards to the Bulldogs. Sulphur was well balanced offensively, as the Bulldogs had 120 yards rushing and 130 yards passing. A special teams touchdown and a pick six for the Bulldogs was too much for the Chieftains to overcome.

Seminole will need to win their final two games in order to qualify for the playoffs. They will start that quest on Friday, Nov. 1, when they travel to take on the Mannford Pirates. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
