Strother Yellowjackets Win Regional Championship Monday
The Strother Yellowjackets come out on top in their Regional Playoffs and are crowned Regional Champions in District 4 Monday.
The regional play had a postponement Thursday due to the weather. The games were moved to Friday, Saturday and Monday.
The Strother Lady Yellowjackets started their regional playoffs Friday against Geary. The Lady Yellowjackets took care of business and won 64-40. The Lady Yell owjackets faced Earlsboro Saturday afternoon and advanced to the Championship round with a final score of 68-50. Strother took on Dover Monday afternoon for the Regional Championship. The game was a very close and exciting game. The Lady Yellowjackets was playing catchup most of the game but closed the gap to within 4 points with one minute remaining. Dover made their shots count in the final seconds of the game and pulled away to win the Regional Championship 42-34.
The Strother girls ended their season with a 16-12 season.
The Strother Yellowjacket boys started their regional playoffs facing Geary Friday. Strother came away with the victory with a final score of 52-48. Next the Strother Yellowjackets took on the Sasakwa Vikings Saturday afternoon. Strother took the early lead in the first going on an 11-9 run.
Strother applied some offensive pressure in the second with Payton Moody, Kayden Schultz and Jeremiah Lena each knocking down a threepoint shot in the frame to extend their lead.
Sasakwa was down by 11 points at the half. Nate Read of the Vikings scored 5 points in the quarter to help Sasakwa stay in the game, but the Yellowjackets continued to find their three-point range with Moody and Michael Kanard scoring a trey.
The Vikings were down by 16 heading into the last quarter. Josh Jones and Titan Collins drained a three point to help the Vikings score 15 in the quarter, but the Yellowjackets stepped on the gas in the fourth with Schultz scoring 10 points and Kanard scoring 10 points to put the game away with a final score of 72-43.
Scoring for Sasakwa was Josh Jones with 14 points, two three-point shots and was two of four from the foul line.
Nate Read scored 11 points, one trey and was four of five from the line.
Scoring for Strother was Michard Kanard scored 26 points, three treys and was five of six from the line.
Kayden Schultz scored 18 points, two treys and was two of three from the line.
Jeremiah Lena scored 13 points, one trey and was two of four from the line.
Next was Carney for the Yellowjackets. The game was played on Monday for the Regional Championship.
The teams were evenly matched as the Carney Bulldogs edged out the Yellowjackets by one point after the first.
Strother fired back in the second with Michael Kanard scoring 6 points in the frame as the defense held the Bulldogs to 9 points scored.
The Yellowjackets had a 3-point lead at the break. Defense was key in the third on both sides. It was a low scoring quarter as the Yellowjackets edged out the Bulldogs by 2.
The game was still close, heading into the fourth quarter with Strother ahead by 5. The quarter was a nail-biter with both teams pouring it on. John Martin of Carney found his threepoint range in the frame and scored three treys to fire up the Carney crowd. The Bulldogs closed the gap by two at one point, but the Yellowjackets stayed calm and stuck to their game plan and pulled out the win with Peyton Moody and Michael Kanard hitting a threepoint shot to help Strother win the Regional Championship.
Scoring for Strother was Michael Kanard with 17 points, two treys and was one of four from the foul line.
Jeremiah Lena scored 9 points and was one of eight from the line.
Peyton Moody scored 8 points, one trey and was three of six from the line.
The Strother Yellowjackets now move on to Area playoffs and will play Thursday the 27th against Moyers at the Seminole High School gym.
The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
