Strother Yellowjackets Host Varnum for Homecoming

The Strother Yellowjackets celebrated their homecoming Friday night as they hosted the Varnum Whippets.

The Yellowjackets selected Geneva Reynolds as their Queen and Michael Kanard as their King.

The Yellowjackets and Whippet boys took to the court first and Strother jumped out to an early lead as the Yellowjackets went on a 13-8 run in the first.

The Whippets settled down and fired back in the second with the defense holding the Yellowjackets to just four points scored in the frame while offense help the Whippets take the lead before the half.

The Yellowjackets were down by 5 points heading into the third quarter.

Strother went back on the attack on offense in the third and regained the lead by going on a 21-11 run.

The game was going back and forth in the final quarter, but the Varnum Whippets pulled out the victory in a close and tough battle with a final score of 51-48.

Leading for the Varnum Whippets was Daison Hadley with 18 points, four threepoint shots, two assists, one block, one steal and was four of four from the free throw line.

Jon Madkins scored 13 points, one assist, six rebounds, one steal and was one of four from the free throw line.

(no stats were given for Strother) The Lady Yellowjackets were next to take on the Varnum Lady Whippets.

The Lady Whippets took control of the game in the first quarter by going on a 24-5 run to set their pace.

The Lady Yellowjackets defense slowed down Varnum is the second and tried to close the gap before the break.

The Lady Yellowjackets still had a hill to climb in the third quarter but struggled on offense. The Lady Whippets found their momentum again and went on a 22-8 run in the quarter.

Strother found a little daylight in the fourth quarter, but time was not on the Lady Yellowjackets side as the Varnum Lady Whippets coasted in for the win with a final score of 69-38.

Leading the way for the Lady Whippets was Alyviah Lena with 18 points, two treys, eight assists, two rebounds, three steals and was four of four from the free throw line.

Ashlyn White-Richards scored 12 points, two treys, three assists, two rebounds, six steals and was two of two from the line.

Faith Madkins scored 11 points, five rebounds, three steals and was three of four from the line.

Next up for Strother is a home game against Bowlegs Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m.

Next up for Varnum is a home game Friday night against OCA at 6:30 p.m.
