Seminole County Schools Win at LRC Baseball Tournament
The Little River Conference Baseball Tournament was delayed last week due to the weather and was moved to Tuesday and Wednesday of this past week.
The Strother Yellowjackets, Sasakwa Vikings and Varnum Whippets came out on top.
The tournament was divided into two fields, the New Lima home field which hosted Moss, Mason, Paden and New Lima and the Varnum home field that hosted Sasakwa, Strother, Earlsboro and Varnum.
On Tuesday in the first round, New Lima defeated Paden 5-2 and moved on to face Moss later that day and lost 0-10.
The Sasakwa Vikings faced the Strother Yellowjackets in the first round with the Vikings winning 13-1. Sasakwa moved on to face Varnum and lost 2-8. The Strother Yellowjackets lost to Sasakwa and faced Earlsboro and defeated the Wildcats 17-4.
The Varnum Whippets started their tournament off facing Earlsboro. The Whippets shut out the Wildcats 5-0. Varnum moved on to face Sasakwa and won 8-2.
Wednesday was the championship games, and all the games came down to the wire.
The Strother Yellowjackets took on Paden for the Consolation Championship Wednesday at noon. The game was a close one with the Yellowjackets coming out on top with a final score of 4-3 to the LRC Consolation Championship.
The New Lima Falcons faced the Sasakwa Vikings for third place. The game was also a tight game. The Vikings went to bat first and Darius Henderson hit a home run and knocked in runner Micah Wheeler and Thad Harjo scored on a passed ball to take the early lead. New Lima went threeand- out. Both teams went scoreless in the second inning.
New Lima got on the board and closed the gap in the bottom of the 3rd when Will Mayfield scored on a bunt and Logan Peffley scored on a ground ball. Sasakwa added another run to their score when Henderson scored on a passed ball.
In the last inning, Sasakwa went scoreless, and it was a chance for New Lima to make a comeback. The Falcons only scored one run when Mayfield scored on a line drive.
The Sasakwa Vikings won third place with a final score of 4-3.
Pitching for New Lima was Tanner Johnston who pitched two innings, allowing three runs, striking out one and walking two.
Alex Leaver pitched two innings, allowing one run, striking out six and walking zero.
Pitching for Sasakwa was Titus Collins who pitched four innings, allowing three runs, striking out six and walking one.
Ayden Livesay pitched one inning, allowing zero runs, striking out three and walking zero.
The Varnum Whippets faced the Moss Pirates for the Championship on Wednesday afternoon.
The Pirates took to the plate first and jumped on the board with a single run scored. The Whippets struggled through the first two innings.
Moss added to their lead in the third with two more runs scored to put the score 3-0. The Whippets closed the gap in the third when Brayden Goodwin scored on a line drive and Devyn Fullbright scored on a passed ball.
Neither team scored a run in the fourth inning.
In the last inning, the Pirates thought they had put the game away with four runs scored to make the score 6-2 at the top of the fifth.
The Varnum Whippets had one inning to make a comeback and did. Goodwin scored on a fly ball, Payton Romines scored on a ground ball, Ben Suarez and Aiden Cooper scored on an error, Alejandron Montesino scored on a ground ball to tie the game up and Copper Smith scored on a fly ball to help the Whippets win the LRC Championship game with a final score of 8-7.
Pitching for Varnum was Aiden Cooper who pitched five innings, allowing seven runs, striking out five and walking two.
