Sasakwa Vikings Win District Championship Saturday

Sasakwa was the site for the District 2 Area IV basketball district playoffs this past weekend. Schools competing at the site were Maud and Earlsboro along with Sasakwa.

The Sasakwa Lady Vikings didn’t have to play until Friday evening against the Maud Lady Tigers. The game was a close matchup in the first. The Lady Tigers edged out Sasakwa by one point heading into the second. Jaycee Pack of Maud scored 6 points in the frame and Chasity Thomas of Sasakwa was 3 of 4 from the foul line.

The Lady Vikings regained the lead in the second going on a 17-11 run. Thomas scored 7 of those points for Sasakwa.

The Lady Tigers were looking at a 5-point deficit heading into the third.

Maud regrouped at the break and fired back with Pack scoring 8 points and Amerikus Street knocking down a trey to help the Lady Tigers go on a 17-12 run.

The Lady Vikings were down by two heading into the final frame. The Lady Vikings took the lead around halfway through the quarter, but the Lady Tigers rallied back and tied things up at 50 apiece with one minute remaining. Sasakwa scored 2 points and then they were fouled and went ahead by four. The Lady Tigers scored 2 points to close the gap, but Maud could only foul to keep time on the clock. The Lady Vikings scored the rest of their points from the foul line to win the game 56-52.

Scoring for Maud Lady Tigers was Jaycee Pack with 16 points from the field.

Aubri Kueneman with 9 points and was 3 of 7 from the foul line.

Amerikus Street had 13 points, one trey and was 2 of 3 from the line.

Scoring for Sasakwa Lady Vikings was Chasity Thomas with 14 points and was 10 of 14 from the foul line.

McKayla Harjo had 13 points and was 3 of 4 from the line.

Addy Odom scored 11 points, and one three-point shot.

The Maud Lady Tigers finished their season with a 5-14 record.

The Sasakwa Lady Vikings advanced to the district championship on Saturday.

The Lady Vikings started the Championship Saturday off facing the Earlsboro Lady Wildcats. The Lady Vikings fell behind early by 9 points in the first.

The Lady Wildcats stuck to their offensive game plan in the second as Lilly Gentry and B. Nadenu found their three-point range in the second to help Earlsboro keep their lead.

The Lady Vikings had a hard time finding their rhythm but scored 9 points in the frame.

Earlsboro had the lead with a halftime score of 28-14 over Sasakwa.

The Lady Vikings tried to close the gap in the second half. The Lady Wildcats went on an 18-11 run in the third quarter.

KK Wheeler of Sasakwa found her rhythm in the last quarter and scored 7 points to help the Lady Vikings score 15 points to close the gap. The Lady Wildcats also scored 15 points in the frame to win the district championship 61-40.

Scoring for the Lady Vikings was KK Wheeler with 10 points and was 2 of 6 from the line.

McKayla Harjo scored 9 points and was 5 of 8 from the line.

Shalynn Lamb and Chasity Thomas each scored 6 points.

Both Earlsboro and Sasakwa advanced to the Regional Playoffs February 20-22 which will be held at Earlsboro.

The Sasakwa Vikings boys and Earlsboro Wildcat boys played the last game of the evening for the District Championship Saturday night.

The Vikings won the last matchup between the teams and Earlsboro winning the first one during the LRC Tournament. Both teams needed the win.

Darius Henderson and Josh Jones of Sasakwa scored 5 points each as Nate Read knocked down a trey to help the Vikings take the lead with a 19-10 lead in the first.

The Wildcats defense stepped up in the second and held the Vikings to 11 points in the second but could not close the gap much. The Vikings had a 11-point lead at the break.

The battle got tighter in the third as both teams took turns lighting up the scoreboard. Micah Wheeler scored 8 points in the frame and Thad Harjo knocked down a trey as both teams scored 12 points each.

In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats made a comeback rally with Wes Lowe hitting two treys and Quitin Lena scoring 7 points in the frame but the Vikings lead was just out of reach for Earlsboro. Sasakwa’s Josh Jones was 5 of 6 from the foul line to help the Vikings win the District Championship with a final score of 54-48.

Scoring for the Vikings was Micah Wheeler with 16 points.

Darius Henderson had 10 points and was 2 of 3 from the line.

Josh Jones had 10 points and was 6 of 7 from the line.

Both Sasakwa and Earlsboro advance to the Regionals Playoffs this weekend at Earlsboro.
