Sasakwa Vikings Win 8-Man Classic Baseball Tournament
The Sasakwa Vikings hosted an 8-Man Classic Baseball Tournament Thursday and Friday this past week and came away Champions.
The Maud Tigers and the Strother Yellowjackets participated in the event along with five other surrounding schools.
The Sasakwa Vikings started their tournament off facing Wilson-Henryetta Thursday. The Vikings built a 5-run lead in the fourth and held off a rally by Wilson-Henryetta to win a close game 6-5.
The Vikings faced the Maud Tigers Friday. Sasakwa had the game won by the third inning with 11 runs scored. Sasakwa won 15-3 to advance to the championship game.
The Strother Yellowjackets started their tournament off facing the Thackerville Wildcats Thursday. The Yellowjackets took care of the Wildcats with a final score of 10-7. Strother faced the Savanna Bulldogs Friday and beat the Bulldogs 6-3 to advance to the championship game.
The tournament championship game was originally scheduled for Saturday but with rain coming in the area Saturday, the championship game was played Friday night.
The Yellowjackets went to bat first in the game. Strother lit up the scoreboard when Mylam Defries scored on a steal. The Vikings tied the game up at the bottom of the first when Titus Collins scored on a line drive.
Sasakwa held the Yellowjackets scoreless in the second and took advantage at the bottom of the inning when Bryor Bible scored on a fly ball, Nathaniel Gentry scored on a ground ball and Micah Wheeler scored on a steal of home.
Strother got back on the board with a single run by DeFries on a ground ball at the top of the third. The Vikings went threeand-out at the bottom of the inning.
Sasakwa extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth with Gentry scoring on a steal of home, Darius Henderson hits a homerun and Ayden Livesay scored on a ground ball.
Neither team scored in the fifth.
The Yellowjackets were down by five, heading into the sixth inning. Strother closed the gap in the inning with Bryce Martin and Curtis Wilkins scoring on a walk and Green scoring on a passed ball.
The defense of the Yellowjackets held the Vikings scoreless at the bottom of the sixth and had a chance to tie or win the game in the seventh.
Strother was up to bat at the top of the inning, down by 2. After one out, P. Moody scored on a steal of home to close the gap, but the Yellowjackets suffered two more outs and fell short of their goal.
The Sasakwa Vikings won the Tournament Championship with a final score of 7-6.
Pitching for Strother was Green who pitched 5.2 innings, allowing 8 runs, striking out 6 and walking 7.
Pitching for Sasakwa was Thad Harjo who pitched six innings, allowing five runs, striking out 11 and walking 5.
Ayden Livesay pitched one inning, allowing one run and striking out one.
Next up for Strother is an away game at Moss today at 4 p.m.
Districts for Strother is at Asher with the Bowlegs Bison attending.
Next up for Sasakwa was a game at Konawa but due to the rain over the weekend, the game has been canceled.
The Sasakwa Vikings are hosting Districts with Buffalo Valley and the Butner Eagles playing.
