Sasakwa Battles Varnum at Home Tuesday Night

The Sasakwa Vikings hosted the number 2 Varnum Whippets Tuesday night in a battle of Class B elites.

The Sasakwa Lady Vikings took to the court first to take on the Varnum Lady Whippets. Varnum entered the game 12-7 on the season and the Lady Vikings entered the game 9-8.

The Lady Vikings took the early lead in the top half of the game with Shalynn Lamb scoring 6 points and McKayla Harjo scoring 8 points. The Lady Whippets fired back in the bottom of the quarter with Shysie Harjo and Katherine Morgan finding their three-point range to help Varnum go 18-16 in the frame.

The defense of Varnum frustrated the Lady Vikings in the second and holding them to 4 points scored. The offense continued to find the basket and add to their lead.

The Lady Vikings were down by eight, heading into the third quarter.

The Lady Vikings fired back on offense in the third with Alexis James scoring 9 points in the quarter.

Lady Whippet Jenna Lofton found her three-point range in the frame as Shysie Harjo drained two more to help Varnum go on a 19-15 run.

The Lady Vikings battled through four quarters against the Lady Whippets but fell short of the win.

The Varnum Lady Whippets won the battle with a final score of 62-43.

Leading for Sasakwa was KK Wheeler with 12 points and was 4 of 6 from the free throw line.

McKayla Harjo had 10 points and was two of four from the line and Alexis James had 9 points and was three of three from the line.

The Lady Vikings had 38 rebounds and 4 blocks in the game.

Scoring for the Lady Whippets was Shysie Harjo with 17 points, 3 threepoint shots, 2 assists and 4 rebounds.

Maegan Wildcat had 8 points, 2 assists and 4 steals.

Jazmyn Williams had 8 points, 1 assist, 3 rebounds and 3 steals.

The Lady Whippets had 17 assists, 33 rebounds and 21 steals in the game.

Next up was the Vikings and Whippet boys.

The Varnum Whippets boys entered the game with a record of 18-1 on the season and the Sasakwa Viking boys entered the game 15-2 on the season.

Sasakwa struggled on offense in the first and the defense committed multiple fouls on Varnum as the Whippets shot 11 of 14 from the foul line to go 20-10 in the quarter.

Varnum ran into foul trouble in the second as the Vikings shot 6 of 8 from the line but the Whippets found their three-point range with Devyn Fullbright and Trenton Mack knocking down a trey and Jon Madkins scoring 8 points in the quarter.

The Vikings were down by 17 points going into the break.

The third quarter was a battle as the teams went back and forth on scoring. Sasakwa’s Josh Jones knocked down a trey and totaling 7 points in the frame and Varnum’s C.J. Bernard scored 8 points to kept it close.

The Varnum Whippets had a 20-point lead heading into the final frame. The Vikings fired back and closed the gap with Micah Wheeler hitting two treys to help Sasakwa score 17 points. The defense of the Vikings held the Whippets to 13 points in the frame, but Varnum’s lead was out of reach before the end of regulation.

The Varnum Whippets won the battle, 67-51.

Leading the way for the Sasakwa Vikings was Josh Jones with 18 points, one trey and was 3 of 4 from the line.

Micha Wheeler had 12 points, two treys and was 2 for 2 from the line.

Darius Henderson scored 6 points on the evening.

The Sasakwa Vikings had 28 rebounds, 4 blocks and shot 62% from the free throw line.

Leading for the Varnum Whippets was C.J. Bernard with 24 points, 3 assists, 15 rebounds, 1 block, 1 steal and was 10 of 11 from the line.

Jon Madkins had 21 points, 15 rebounds, 6 blocks, 2 steals and was 3 of 5 from the line.

Trenton Mack had 10 points and two three-point shots.

The Varnum Whippets had 12 assists, 34 rebounds, 9 blocks and 9 steals in the game.

Next up for Varnum is a home game on the 31st of January against the Strother Yellowjackets. This game will be Varnum’s Senior Night. Game time is set to start at 6:30 p.m.

Next up for Sasakwa is an away game at Weleetka on the 31st of January.

The next home game for Sasakwa is the 7th of February against Mason. Game time is set to start at 6:00 p.m.
