New No. 1 in SEC Power Rankings Entering Final Weekend
SOONER WIRE - It’s the final week of the regular season. After this weekend’s action, it’s SEC Tournament time followed by the NCAA Tournament.
The SEC title race has been fantastic and the Oklahoma Sooners have put themselves in a familiar position in their first season in the SEC. Despite a pair of series losses to Tennessee and Alabama, Oklahoma pulled together and responded with a six-game winning streak in conference play while averaging seven runs a game in the process.
The SEC regular season title will now come down to OU, Texas A&M, and Tennessee. The Volunteers will host the Aggies this weekend in Knoxville while the Sooners go on the road to play the Florida Gators, one of the preseason favorites to win the national title.
Despite the midseason setback, the Sooners are back on top of the standings and of the top 25 rankings across the sport. So, where did they land in this week’s SEC Power Rankings? Back where they belong at No. 1.
1. Oklahoma Sooners (42-5, 16-5)
The Texas Longhorns were a lot of people’s pick to win the Women’s College World Series this year and be the team to finally put an end to Oklahoma’s dominant run.
2. Tennessee Volunteers (39-11, 14-7)
The Tennessee Volunteers hold series wins over Texas and Oklahoma but that was a different Sooners team that they played back in March.
3. Texas Longhorns (42-9, 13-8)
The Texas Longhorns had an opportunity to assert themselves at the top of the sport but OU has their number. It took furious comebacks in game one and two to make the series look respectable.
4. Arkansas Razorbacks (36-10, 12-9) Arkansas’ series win over Texas A&M was a statement to the teams projected to be in the postseason. They’re a dangerous team with Bri Ellis leading the way.
5. Texas A&M Aggies (41-8, 14-6)
Well, at least they were at the top of the sport for a minute. They’ll always have that. The Aggies still have a shot at the SEC regular season title, but they’ll need to sweep the Tennessee Volunteers and Oklahoma will have to lose their series to the Florida Gators.
