Lady Whippets Basketball Season Ends
The Varnum Lady Whippets fell short of their goal this past weekend at the Area Playoffs.
The Lady Whippets won their first round of regionals over Pittsburg with a score of 50-46, then they took a hard loss to Whitesboro with a final score of 25-66 on the 22nd of February. The Lady Whippets had one more chance to make to State in the Area Playoffs Thursday night in Seminole against Dover.
The Dover Lady Longhorns kept up with the Lady Whippets in the first quarter and edged out Varnum by one point.
Neither team showed any give as both teams continued to battle throughout the second quarter.
The Varnum Lady Whippets were still down by one point at the break.
The Longhorns slowly pulled away in the third and extended their lead by 5 by the end of the quarter.
The score was Dover 35 and Varnum 30 heading into the final frame. The Lady Longhorns stuck with their third quarter momentum and continued to make their baskets count. Varnum struggled on offense but left it all on the court Thursday evening.
The Varnum Lady Whippets season came to an end with a final score of 38-49. Varnum finished the season with a 17-11 record.
“I appreciate the hard work, commitment and dedication that all of these girls showed this season,” Stated Head Coach Jon Hadley.
“They were great young ladies that were fun to work with and coach throughout the year. It rarely ends exactly how and when we want it to, but these ladies overcame a lot in the last year. We kept working and ended up accomplishing several things and having a successful season. I appreciate each and every one of them and their contribution,” Coach Hadley.
Scoring for the Lady Whippets was Ashlyn White-Richards with 12 points, two three-point shots, 3 assists and 4 rebounds.
Katherine Morgan scored 9 points, one trey, 5 assists, 5 rebounds and one steal.
Maegan Wildcat scored 5 points, one trey, one assist and 4 rebounds.
The Varnum Lady Whippets accolades this season were: LRC Tournament Champions District Champions Regional Champions 13th consecutive year to make it to Area or beyond.
