Konawa Tigers are Tournament Champions

The Konawa Tigers traveled to Wewoka to compete in the First Annual Wewoka Baseball Tournament this past weekend and came away as Tournament Champions.

The schools participating in the tournament were Canadian, Konawa, Prue, Strother, Wewoka and Yale.

The Konawa Tigers faced off against the Strother Yellowjackets Thursday afternoon. The Yellowjackets went up to bat first and went three-and-out. The Tigers got on board at the bottom of the first when Tyler Whitley scored on an error and Cooper McKeel scored on a passed ball to take a twopoint lead.

The Yellowjackets struggled on offense and went scoreless in the second. The Tigers went to work in the second when Tanner Johnson scored on a ground ball, Isaiah Johnson and Bennett Henson scored on a ground ball, Whitley scored on a ground, McKeel scored on a wild pitch, R Sitton scored on a walk, Jarmarcus Brooks scored on a line drive, Johnson and Henson scored on a pop fly and Whitley scored on a pop fly to go 13-0 at the bottom of the inning.

Strother went to bat at the top of the third and again went scoreless. The game was called.

Pitching for Strother was Gillespie who pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing 13 runs, striking out two and walking six.

Pitching for Konawa was Hayden Moore who pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing zero runs, striking out three and walking one.

Next up for the Tigers was Yale A group on Friday.

The Yale Bulldogs went to bat first and took the early lead with two runs scored at the top of the first. The Tigers struggled and went three-and-out.

The Bulldogs added to their lead with another run in the second. The Tigers had enough and fired back strong in the bottom of the inning with Cooper McKeel scoring on a fly ball, Raydon Sitton scored on a steal of home, Jamarcus Brooks scored on a steal of home, Tanner Johnson and Moses Isaacs scored on a ground ball, Bennett Henson scored on a fly ball, Hayden Moore and McKeel score on steal of home, Brooks scored on a fly ball, Isaacs scored on a steal of home, Johnson scored on a fly ball and Isaiah Johnson scored on a fly ball to take a commanding lead.

Yale managed to score another run in the third but no more than that. The Tigers added another run by McKeel on a ground ball and the game was called.

The Konawa Tigers won 15 to 4.

Pitching for Konawa was Grady Moore who pitched 3 innings, allowing four runs, striking out eight and walking none.

The Tigers moved on to the Tournament Championship game against Canadian.

The Championship game was played on Saturday with the Canadian Cougars stepping up to the plate first.

The Cougars got on board first with a single run to take the lead. The Tigers answered right back in a bi way when Bennett Henson scored on a fly ball, Tyler Whitley scored on a steal of home, Hayden Moore and Cooper McKeel scored on a ground ball, Raydon Sitton scored on a advance, Jamarcus Brooks scored on a ground ball, Grady Moore scored on a steal of home, Moses Isaacs scored on a ground ball, Tanner Johnson and Henson scored on a steal of home, Whitley scored on a ground ball, Moore scored on a ground ball, McKeel scored on a fly ball, Sitton scored on a steal of home, Brooks scored on a sacrifice bunt and Jaylyn Matchie scored on bunt.

The score heading into the second was 16-1 Konawa.

The Cougars rallied back at the top of the second with 10 runs scored to close the by 5 runs. The defense of the Cougars held the Tigers scoreless in the second and tried to capitalize in the third but went 3 and out themselves. The Tigers added to their lead with four runs by Johnson, McKeel, Isaacs and Whitley.

The Cougars had no answer in the fourth inning and the Tigers put the game away when Henson singles on a fly ball and knocks in Moore for the winning run. The Konawa Tigers won the first Annual Wewoka Baseball Tournament with a final score of 21-11.

Pitching for Konawa was Tyler Whitley who pitched the first one and 1/3 innings, allowing 11 runs, striking out two and walking six. Hayden Moore was the relief pitcher and pitched two innings, allowing zero runs, striking out three and walking one.

Next up for Konawa is an away game at Maud on the 18th. The next home game is on the 21st against Little Axe. The game is set to start at 4;30 p.m.

Next up for Strother is an away game at Wetumka on the 18th. The next home game is on the 20th against Wewoka. The games are set to start at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
