Coach Gundy and Cowboys Preview Road Trip to Waco
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy and several players met with the media Monday in Stillwater to preview the upcoming game at Baylor. Here are some of their comments: Head Coach Mike Gundy On the offensive performance against BYU:
“The offense exceeded expectations, in my opinion. They had an excellent gameplan and they carried it out. The players were very attentive in practice and practiced really well the last two weeks, and that’s the result they got.”
On Rodney Fields Jr.’s debut:
“He looked really good, but we’ve seen that. We’ve seen it since August with him. He has ability, but we don’t know because he’s never been in games. That environment we played in was as difficult of an environment that we’ve played in since I’ve been a coach here, and he just went out and played like it was no big deal.”
On the competitive nature of the team:
“If you’d have been at our practices the last two weeks, you would’ve thought we were 6-0. My job is to evaluate the coaches, the players and myself after every game. Our guys played a good football game. We had a good plan, the coaches did a good job in this game. Losing is not something we want, but my job is to evaluate the situation every week. From that standpoint, they were good.”
On Ollie Gordon II’s impact this season:
“He’s been great. We started out the year with really, really heavy boxes, difficult at times for him to run… The last four games, he’s run really hard. There’s been times that there’s not much there, and he’s just blowing through there. He’s jumping over people. I thought his effort the other day on fourth down was excellent. He’s been really good, and his attitude has been good.”
On Baylor:
“They’re playing good. Baylor’s a team that lost several games they had a chance to win. They got down a bunch to BYU and battled back. They certainly could have beat Colorado. They got behind by 17 against Utah and battled back. I don’t even know how many games they’ve won, I haven’t paid attention, but they could’ve won three more just based on what I’ve seen. The quarterback is playing better now and they’re actually playing together.”
Safety Parker Robertson On his first start:
“Getting my first start was definitely a big steppingstone. As the game went on, I got more and more comfortable. Going through and trusting the system. I’ve practiced just as many reps as everyone else. Just stepping into the shoes and being able to trust my teammates, they have my back. It worked pretty well.”
On walking on to starting a conference game:
“It’s surreal. If you ask senior-in-high-school Parker, he wouldn’t have thought he would be in this situation. The constant grind, effort and time I’ve put in is a surreal moment. I can’t wait to keep pushing forward.”
Defensive Lineman Collin Clay On expectations moving forward:
“It’s consistency. I just want to be able to dominate every single snap. I take pride in that for myself because I know what I can do on and off the field. As a unit, tackling, being physical and being better every single week. Watch more film. If you only watch ten minutes, do 15 or 20. I expect more from everyone else because I put that expectation on myself. Taking more time with coaches in the film room to doing the things you need to do to be ready on game day.”
On points of emphasis against Baylor:
“We know they are going to want to pass the ball, but upfront, for us, regardless of if they like to run or pass, we always take pride in stopping the run. That will be one thing we continue to focus on.”
Offensive Lineman Jake Springfield On how to keep the offensive momentum going:
“The same mentality we’ve had the whole year. Just get a little bit better every day. Find something to improve on, work on it that day. Just get better day by day, week by week. That’s something we’ve been doing and it’s starting to show now.”
On Alan Bowman’s performance against BYU:
“I think he handled it perfectly. He came back out there like he didn’t miss a beat. He was able to come in and pick up right where Garret left off. We were able to still move the ball, get a couple more scores. I’m just proud of the way he handled it. He’s a really tough guy.”
Wide Receiver Da’Wain Lofton On the offense’s success against BYU:
“I wouldn’t say it was a relief, but it felt good just going out there with the offense moving the ball pretty well down the field, moving the chains and just being more consistent than we had been.”
On offensive focuses over the past few weeks:
“Really just focusing on the fundamentals and all the details. Everybody just doing their job, doing their one-eleventh. Just coming in executing to perfection.”
Oklahoma State will play Baylor Saturday the 26th in Waco. The game is set to kickoff at 2:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN+
