JoAnn Bateman Oakley, born September 11, 1937 to Truman R. and Winnie Lorene Brown Bateman in Durant, Oklahoma, passed from this life on October 5, 2019 as a result of a stroke in Sugar Land, Texas at the age of 82.

JoAnn graduated from Seminole High School in 1955. She was very active in Mixed Chorus, Glee Club and Girls’ Octette. She also participated in FHA (Future Homemakers of America) all four years, attending FHA Conventions. JoAnn loved singing and was a true homemaker.

In early years, JoAnn worked at Seminole High School for Mr. H.B. Mitchell. She also worked at Seminole Municipal Hospital and T.G.&Y Corporate office in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

JoAnn grew up as a member of the Seminole Church of Christ at Park & Seminole. She attended Churches of Christ in all cities where she lived.

She married Tommy Rhea Oakley on December 29, 1956 at the Seminole Church of Christ. Tommy worked for Dresser Atlas from 1959 to retirement, with the family living in Woodward, Oklahoma, Liberal, Kansas and Longview, Odessa and Houston, Texas. Tommy passed away on January 13, 1994.

JoAnn and Tommy were blessed with the births of two sons, Bart Steven Oakley in 1959 and Gregory Thomas Oakley in 1962. Bart passed away in 1978.

JoAnn is survived by a son, Gregory (Cathy) Oakley of Sugar Land, Texas, three grandchildren, Garrett (Michelle) Oakley, Derek (Jessi) Oakley and Denee’ (Wes) Monico, seven great grandchildren, two sisters, Barbara Stotts of Seminole, Oklahoma and Phyllis Dye of Canyon Lake, Texas, two nieces, Susie Hicks and Stacy Long and one nephew, Danny Stotts.

Also surviving JoAnn are friends; Naveda Wise Ely of Okarche Oklahoma, Pat Cline Crawford Atyia of Seminole, Oklahoma, Betty Stanfill Johnson of Canyon, Texas and Deanna Baker Funk of Surprise, Arizona.

JoAnn was preceded in death by husband Tommy Oakley in 1994 son, Bart Oakley in 1978, father, Truman R. Batemen in 1966, mother, Winnie Lorene Brown Bateman Webb in 2011, step-father, Raymond Webb in 2002, grandparents, Marshall and Isma Brown and Delbert and Martha Bateman of Durant, Oklahoma and father and mother in law, Bill and Hazel Oakley.

Viewing for JoAnn will begin at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma, followed by a chapel service officiated by Matt Pollock. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.
