Yellowjackets Lose Sting Against Whippets
The Varnum Whippets hosted the Strother Yellowjackets Friday night in some great basketball action.
The number 4 Varnum Lady Whippets were taking on the number 17 Strother Lady Yellowjackets first.
The Lady Yellowjackets were not intimidated by Varnum and took the early lead in the first. It was a hard-fought battle for both.
The Lady Whippets kept to their game plan on offense but stepped up their defense in the second and held the Lady Yellowjackets to 8 points scored.
Varnum had a 3-point lead at the half. The battled continued in the third with every point scored by either team was a fight.
The Lady Yellowjackets made another comeback in the fourth but the offensive attack by the Lady Whippets proved to be too much for Strother. The Varnum Lady Whippets win 61-46.
Leading the way for Varnum was Hailey Mack with 24 points, 4 three-point shots, 2 assists, 3 rebounds, and was 4 of 4 from the free throw line.
Jesslyn Works had 19 points, 3 three-point shots, 1 assist, 2 rebounds, 3 steals and was 4 of 4 from the line.
Mindi Wildcat had 13 points, 2 three point shots, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, 5 steals and was 3 of 4 from the foul line.
Next up, the Varnum Whippet boys took on the Strother Yellowjacket boys.
Varnum came into the game ranked number 18 and showed why in the first half.
The first quarter was a good match up between the teams. Each battled to take a lead but Varnum edged out the Yellowjackets by 5.
In the second, the defense of the Whippets pressured the Yellowjackets and kept them to only 7 points scored in the quarter.
Varnum had a good lead heading into the third. Strother had changed their game plan dominated the third. The Yellowjackets had gone on a 25-8 run to take the lead for the first time in the game.
The score now was 45-39 Strother. Varnum protected their home court in the fourth with an offensive comeback. The game was close and Strother never gave up but the Varnum Whippets pulled out the victory with a final score of 63-56.
Scoring for the Varnum Whippets was Jon Madkins with 20 points, 18 rebounds and was 6 of 10 from the foul line.
C.J. Bernard had 13 points, one three point shot, 6 rebounds, 1 steal and was 2 of 2 from the line.
Kylan Mack had 12 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.
Next up for Varnum is Sasakwa at home on the 30th. This game is a re-schedule due to weather conditions. The boys travelled to Oktaha on the 3rd and the girls take on Coyle at home on the 6th.
