Three Seminole area girls will be at East Central State College in Ada May 26 through June 2 to take part in this year’s Girls State sessions. The American Legion Auxiliary of Oklahoma sponsors the sessions annually and the local unit designates the local candidates to attend.

Director of sessions this year will be Mrs. Alvin Heldebrecht of Altus, past department president who served Girls State as senior counselor for many years. She also served as director for the 1971 sessions and participated in Girls Nation the year before.

All Girls Staters must be High School Juniors. Outstanding girls from the 1972 Girls State will return as junior counselors.

Representing Strother High School will be Mary Ann Burgess. Member of the Pep Club, Mary Ann played a role in the Junior-Senior play and when she was a sophomore, she worked as a member of the annual staff and worked on the school newspaper.

A Varnum Junior, Kathy Frost serves as class president. She is sponsored by Varnum school where she is a two-year basketball letterman, three-year member of the State Honor Society and member of the Science Clubs of America. Kathy has won several academic awards and as an eighth grader, she was presented the American Legion citizenship award.

Cindy Rudick is sponsored by the local Legion Auxiliary. At Seminole High School she’s a member of the band, stage band, Junior College state band and will compete on at state level this month in brass solo, duet, and quartet. She earned a “superior” rating in voice on the District level, is an Honor Roll Member and is serving this year as vice-president of the Home Economics Club. She is active in sports including horseback riding, water skiing, bowling, skating and tennis and is Roundup Club Queen this year. She is active in youth circles of First Assembly of God Church.

Girls State is a non-partisan, non-political attempt to teach youth of our nation a love of God and Country. Girls learn the duties and responsibilities of citizenship by actual participation as citizens of a mythical state. The first session of Girls State was in 1940.

Candidates must be selected for their high moral character, honesty, and courage: for leadership scholarship and cooperativeness, physical fitness and interest in government.
