USDA Recalls 42,922 Pounds of Beef Potentially Contaminated with E. coli

The New Jersey company Lakeside Refrigerator Services is recalling nearly 43,000 pounds of raw, ground beef products due to concern it may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. The recall was announced on Saturday, June 13 by the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and is classified as a high risk to consumer’s health.

The products in question were produced June 1, and at the time of the recall, had already been distributed to retailers nationwide (including Wal Mart). If contami nated, the ground beef will have the establishment number “EST. 46841” inside the USDA’s inspection mark.

“E. coli 0157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps 2-8 days (3-4 days on average) after exposure to the organism,” the FSIS notice warns. “While most people recover within a week, some develop a kind of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome.”

The contamination was discovered during a routine testing procedure, according to FSIS and as of right now, there are no confirmed reports of negative reactions to the beef products. However, the department does express concern that some of the infected products may already be in the refrigerators and freezers of consumers.

“Consumers,” FSIS asserts, “who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

Multiple Marketside products were affected and if in need of a comprehensive list, one may visit the USDA’s website. FSIS urges anyone who may have consumed the beef and is experiencing symptoms to contact their local health care provider immediately.
