Two on Gov. Stitt’s Cabinet Step Down

Posted in:

Oklahoma’s digital transformation and administration secretary has stepped down, Governor Kevin Stitt’s office announced last week.

Stitt said on Friday that he had accepted the resignation of David Ostrowe, which took effect Sept. 7. According to Stitt, Ostrowe “will focus on his successful restaurant management business and pursue other personal interests.”

One day before announcing Ostrowe’s resignation, Stitt announced that his general counsel, Jason Reese, had also planned to resign. Reese had been in the position for less than one year.

In December 2020, Ostrowe was indicted for bribery after allega tions surfaced that he had attempted to pressure two Oklahoma Tax Commission members to drop penalties against former State Senator Jason Smalley’s business. Smalley, who left office in January 2020, represented District 28, which includes Seminole County. Former Attorney General Mike Hunter, who resigned earlier this year, eventually dropped those charges, citing a potential conflict of interest within his office.

The indictment against Ostrowe alleged that he attempted to threaten a reduction in state appropriations to convince members of the Oklahoma Tax Commission to waive about $5,000 in fines and penalties against JCG Futures, a company owned by Smalley that operated a restaurant and venue. Smalley had contacted two sitting legislators about the issue, but said he never contacted Ostrowe.

“I told them I’ve never even met David Ostrowe,” Smalley told the online publication Nondoc. “I don’t even think he could tell you who I was if I walked through the door.”

Less than two weeks before the 2020 legislative session began, Oklahoma Smalley announced that he would be resigning to accept a job with Motorola Solutions Corporation.
