Trash Dumping is Becoming a Problem During Pandemic
In the midst of a pandemic, many Seminole residents are finding some of their social distancing time doing some spring cleaning in their homes and yards.
Unfortunately, that also equates to several calls of illegal dumping inside city limits.
“We have found multiple properties inside city limits where people have allowed trash to be dumped,” said James Moon, Code Enforcement Officer for the City of Seminole. “There are also areas that are regular dumping grounds and the owner is not aware.”
“In both cases, it is illegal to dump on a property, and it is also illegal to allow an accumulation of trash and debris on one’s property,” he said.
Dumping on another person’s property can result in citations, fines and the potential for jail time.
“Dumping is a nuisance act,” said Moon. “Sometimes people think they are doing a favor by dumping brush into a low spot, but in some instances, it is blocking a natural drainage that can lead to flash flooding in other areas.”
“There are other negative results of illegal dumping, such as an accumulation of vermin, snakes and other critters, creating a habitat for mosquitos and affecting aesthetics of the neighborhood. No one wants to live next to a dump site.”
It is difficult during the pandemic to know how and where to get rid of large and bulky items.
“The landfill in Wewoka is still open to Seminole residents who can show a current water bill,” said Public Works Director Bryant Baker. “You can take a level pickup load (equal to three cubic yards) to the landfill at no charge if you have a safety vest. If they provide a safety vest, there is a $5 charge.”
Bulk trash pickup has been suspended since April 1, but WCA will once again put large dumpsters behind the Fire Department at Strother and A Street and residents are encouraged to utilize these. This month, they will be there May 11-13.
Waste rules still apply, such as no tires and freon must be evacuated from refrigerators and air conditioners. A complete list of rules can be found at www. seminole-oklahoma.net/ waste-service.
