SPS Calls Bond Election For Playground Upgrades

Posted in:

The Seminole Public School District has called a bond election for playground and outdoor learning space improvements.

The election has been set for Tuesday, April 4. On the ballot is a $510,000 proposal for the purposes of upgrading playgrounds and outdoor learning spaces, including bringing them up to safety and accessibility standards. The term of the bond is five years.

According to Superintendent Dr. Bob Gragg, current tax rates will not go up if the proposal passes, as the same millage rate voters agreed to in the 2017 bond election will be maintained.

“The reason for calling the bond election now is two-fold. First, the need to upgrade the playgrounds is great; and secondly, the current millage rate is below the anticipated rate when the series bonds were passed for the new high school,” Gragg said.

According to Gragg, this bond will not significantly impact the timing of future bond issues according to long-range plans. It is a short-term school improvement stabilization bond.

Gragg said additional information, including frequently asked questions, will be published on the district’s website and social media pushouts leading up to the date of the election.

The deadline for registering to vote in the bond election is Friday, March 10 and the deadline for requesting an absentee ballot is Monday, March 20. Early voting will be available March 30-31 from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. at the Seminole County Courthouse in Wewoka.
