Siberian Express Poised to Deliver Massive Snowfall

(Editor’s note: The following article was based on forecasts as of press time Thursday afternoon. The forecast is subject to change).

An Arctic blast has already dealt a crippling blow to the Seminole area, and it doesn’t appear that Old Man Winter is through with us yet.

Weather forecasters say a couple of snowstorms are on the way, and they could dump several inches of snow – maybe even a foot or more - across central Oklahoma between Saturday and Monday.

In its area forecast discussion published Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Norman said the snow will come in two waves beginning Saturday, with the second wave being the worst.

“A minor wave in the persistent upper-level longwave trough will bring enough lift early Saturday to generate light snow and perhaps a little sleet in our southern counties. The effects of this system should be relatively minor, although with the current and expected temperatures, nothing will melt...and sublimation is rather slow.

“After a very brief break between systems, the main event will begin to affect Oklahoma Saturday night. Snow is expected to start in the northwest, then spread southeast on Sunday, almost certainly bringing snow to our entire forecast area by Monday evening. The good news is that the snow should be low in water content, making it relatively easy to shovel or blow off surfaces. The bad news is that the snow should be low in water content, making it easy for the wind to blow around,” the NWS said.

According to the NWS, snowfall amounts were still uncertain on Thursday, but Seminole County was in the 8-12” zone on the agency’s snow forecast map.

David Payne, Chief Mete-orologist for KWTV in Oklahoma City, said Thursday morning in a Facebook Live broadcast that Monday could be a “train wreck” and there is a good chance that the entire state could be shut down by snow.

A third wave is forecast to arrive Tuesday night, continuing past Wednesday, but was expected to bring only light snow during its visit, the NWS said.

With the expected widespread snow cover, daily high temperatures will struggle to get back above freezing late next week, according to the NWS.
