Seminole County March 2020 Sales Tax Revenue Report

Five cities in Seminole County had an increase in sales tax revenue from the previous year and two cities saw a slight decrease, according to the March report from the Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC).

The report represents sales tax distributions for March 2020, calculated from sales between January 16-31 and estimated sales from February 1-15.

Cities in Seminole County received a total of $728,405.65, which includes all collections from cities and for the county over the reported period. Countywide collections fell 3.1% from the $751,026.11 reported in March 2019.

Bowlegs was one of two municipalities in the county that experienced a decrease in revenue from the previous year. Bowlegs received $1,945.33 in 2020, compared to $2,087.37 in 2019, which is 7.3% less. The loss is the largest for any city in the county.

Cromwell saw a nearly identical total to the previous year, raising $2,947.77, or $9.98 more than 2019’s $2,937.79.

Konawa showed sales tax receipts of $24,917.46 in March, compared to $21,084.79 the year before, an increase of $3,832.67 or 18.2%.

Maud received $8,472.43 from the portion of the city in Seminole County, a 6.3% increase from the $7,971.35 in March of the previous year.

Sasakwa businesses turned in $1,064.23 in 2020 compared to $815.01 in 2019. The 30.6% gain was the largest increase for any city in the county.

Seminole’s sales tax revenues dropped from $398,561.05 in 2019 to $394,145 in 2020. That amount is 1.1% or $4,416.05 lower than what was received the previous year. Despite the downturn, the city of Seminole accounted for 54.1% of all the sales taxes collected in the county for the reported period.

The county seat of Wewoka experienced a gain of 3.5% over revenue received in 2019. Wewoka pulled in $71,371.70 that was received in March 2020.

Seminole County’s sales tax raised $223,541.73 for the reported month, which is $25,073.09 less than $248,614.82 in the previous year.

Other nearby cities saw losses from one reporting period to the next, with only two cities seeing an increase from the previous year.

Ada pulled in $1.296 million, which is an increase of 8.1% from the $1.199 million raised in 2019. The increase was the largest of any nearby city.

Earlsboro saw a decrease of $12,444.67 in March 2020. Earlsboro raised $6,927.95 compared to 2019’s $19,372.62. The 64.2% decrease is the greatest loss for any city listed in the surrounding area. Holdenville received

Holdenville received $214,537.01 from the OTC, a decrease from $215,437.35 in March 2019.

Okemah saw sales tax revenue fall to $77,126.59 after raising $81,331.38 in the preceding March.

The city of Prague raised $86,771.06, a 4.4% increase from $83,107.87 in the previous year.

Shawnee collected $1.602 million for the month, which was below the $1.607 million mark raised in March 2019.

The largest cities by population in the state saw increases in sales tax revenue from 2019 to 2020. Oklahoma City pulled in $36.075 million, an increase from $35.558 million the previous year. Tulsa raised $21.512 million for March 2020, slightly more than the $21.418 raised in the same period in 2019. Those were the highest two totals of any city in the state.

Four cities in Seminole County reported use tax income for March 2020, with three of the four seeing an increase in use tax revenue.

Konawa’s use tax increased from $2,983.80 to $3,178.24 for the most recent reporting period.

In the Seminole County portion of Maud, use tax monies rose to $667.38 in 2020 from $304.78 in 2019. The 119% increase from the previous year was the largest gain for any of the cities in the county reporting use tax.

Seminole’s use tax fell to $29,486.05 in 2020 compared to the previous year’s $39,651.16. The collected taxes were 25.6% lower than in 2019.
